Position Summary:
We are currently seeking an Intermediate Mechanical Engineer for our Calgary, Alberta office. This is a new vacant position for which we are actively recruiting. The successful candidate will support multidisciplinary hydropower, dam, and water resources projects through all phases of planning, design, procurement, construction, and commissioning.
As an Intermediate Mechanical Engineer, you will help design and deliver the mechanical systems behind complex hydropower and water infrastructure projects. Working under the technical direction of a Senior Mechanical Engineer, you will take ownership of detailed design and engineering work while contributing to project strategy, technical decision-making, and the development of practical solutions.
Working closely with a Senior Mechanical Engineer, you will perform the detailed design and technical work that moves projects forward, while influencing how projects are planned, designed, and delivered. Your work may include developing equipment layouts, designing penstocks and piping systems, specifying turbines and gates, preparing procurement documents, reviewing supplier information, and supporting construction and commissioning in the field.
You will work as part of a multidisciplinary team of engineers and specialists, contributing both technical expertise and practical judgment to projects from feasibility through operation. The role is well suited to an engineer who enjoys solving complex problems, working across disciplines, and seeing their designs become functioning infrastructure.
Essential Job Functions:
Perform mechanical engineering design for hydropower and water resources projects from feasibility studies through detailed design, construction, and commissioning.
Lead or support the selection, specification, and procurement of water-to-wire packages, including hydraulic turbines, generators, governors, auxiliary mechanical systems, and associated balance-of-plant equipment.
Perform mechanical design and analysis for hydroelectric facilities, including equipment layouts, piping systems, hydraulic steel structures, and auxiliary systems.
Design and assess penstocks, including routing, supports, expansion provisions, and integration with civil and structural components.
Prepare engineering calculations, technical specifications, procurement packages, tender documents, and contract documentation.
Support the selection, specification, and procurement of intake gates, spillway gates, stoplogs, bulkheads, gate hoists, and other.
Participate in engineering risk assessments and apply sound engineering judgment to identify, evaluate, and mitigate technical and project risks.
Coordinate multidisciplinary engineering activities with civil, structural, electrical, geotechnical, and environmental teams.
Review vendor proposals, evaluate technical submissions, and review supplier drawings and equipment documentation.
Provide engineering support during construction, including responding to RFIs, reviewing contractor submittals, conducting site inspections, resolving technical issues, and supporting commissioning activities.
Prepare engineering reports, design memoranda, feasibility studies, and condition assessment reports.
Support proposal preparation, project planning, scheduling, and client presentations.
Mentor junior engineers and designers while contributing to technical excellence and continuous improvement initiatives.
Required Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering from an accredited university.
Registered Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) in Canada.
Approximately 6–10 years of progressive mechanical engineering and project engineering experience.
Demonstrated experience playing an active role in delivering hydropower and water resources projects.
Experience with the following areas will be an asset:
o Turbine and generator sizing, selection, specification, and procurement
o Penstock design
o Preparation of technical specifications, procurement packages, and tender documents
o Mechanical design and engineering analysis
o Hydraulic power systems for turbine governors, gate control systems and other
o Selection, specification, and procurement of intake and spillway gates and associated structures
o Power and energy modelling and economics for hydro-power projects
o Understanding of fundamentals for power generation protections, controls and communications
o Engineering risk management and application of risk-based design principles
o Engineering support during construction, including contractor submittal reviews, Requests for Information (RFIs), field inspections, and commissioning support
o Engineering support during commissioning including preparation of commissioning plans, and on-site presence.
Strong knowledge of Canadian engineering codes, ASME, CSA, hydraulic steel structures, pressure piping, and hydro-mechanical equipment.
Experience preparing engineering calculations, reports, design documentation, and technical specifications.
Excellent technical writing, communication, and client relationship skills.
Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively within multidisciplinary project teams.
Willingness to travel periodically to project sites across Canada.

The salary range for this position is $95,000 to $145,000. Please note that Tetra Tech considers various factors in determining pay, including but not limited to: education, relevant and demonstrated work experience in the role, skills, geographic location, qualifications, certifications, and other competencies relevant to the needs of the business.
