Director of Communications

Remote – Ontario
Permanent – Full-time (37.5 hours/week)
Salary Range - $65,000 – 73,000

Help turn the living wage movement into a story people cannot ignore.

The Ontario Living Wage Network (OLWN) is working toward an Ontario where a living wage is the standard, not the exception.

We calculate and promote living wage rates, recognize employers that commit to paying a living wage, and equip communities with the information and tools they need to advocate for decent work. Behind every calculation, campaign, employer certification and media story is a simple belief: people should not have to choose between paying their bills and participating fully in their communities.

The opportunity

As Director of Communications, you will be the steward of OLWN’s public voice, brand and identity.

You will lead our external communications, strengthen our digital presence and help make living wage information clear, compelling and accessible. You will also play an important role in building the organization’s reach, relationships and long-term sustainability.

This is a broad role in a small, collaborative organization. Success will require equal parts strategy and execution: someone who can develop a communications approach and then roll up their sleeves to write the content, build the campaign, update the website or solve the technical challenge.

Success factors

We are interested in the full range of experience you could bring to this role. You may have developed your skills through employment, education, consulting, volunteering, community organizing or a combination of these.

You will likely thrive in this position if you bring:

· Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, with an ability to make complex information understandable and engaging.

· Experience developing content and managing communications across multiple digital channels.

· Strong technical confidence and a willingness to learn new systems.

· The ability to move comfortably between strategic thinking and hands-on execution.

· Sound judgment and the ability to adapt messages for different audiences.

· Strong organization and project-management skills, including the ability to balance competing priorities.

· Creativity, curiosity and a willingness to take initiative.

· A collaborative and flexible approach suited to working within a small, mission-driven organization.

· Approximately two to four years of relevant experience—or an equivalent combination of experience, education and demonstrated capability.

Experience in any of the following would be an asset:

· Communications, public relations, marketing or media relations.

· Graphic design, photography or multimedia content creation.

· Website management, email marketing or social media analytics.

· NationBuilder or a comparable constituent relationship management platform.

· Nonprofit, advocacy, labour, public-policy or community-based work.

· Grant writing, sponsorship development or partnership cultivation.

· Living wage, decent work, poverty reduction or income-security issues.

· A degree or diploma in communications, marketing or a related area may be helpful, but it is not the only way to demonstrate that you are ready for this role.
