Job Summary
Reporting to the Senior Administration / Operations Management, the Maintenance, Grounds and Facilities Worker is responsible for the upkeep, appearance, and functional condition of all properties operated by the organization. This is a physically demanding, hands-on role requiring flexibility across multiple work sites. The successful candidate will perform a wide range of duties spanning groundskeeping and landscaping, routine and preventative building maintenance, general heavy labour, operation of heavy machinery and equipment, and support for renovation and construction projects.
Responsibilities
Grounds and Landscaping
- Mow, edge, and maintain lawns, pathways, and outdoor common areas across all sites
- Plant, prune, and maintain trees, shrubs, hedges, and garden beds
- Apply mulch, topsoil, and other landscaping materials as required
- Manage seasonal tasks including snow removal, salting, leaf clearing, and spring/fall cleanup
- Maintain fencing, gates, signage, and exterior structures in good condition
Building and Facilities Maintenance
- Perform routine interior and exterior maintenance including painting, patching, caulking, and minor repairs
- Maintain, inspect, and report on HVAC, plumbing, electrical, and mechanical systems (within non-licensed scope; escalate licensed trades as required)
- Perform regular walkthroughs and safety checks of all facilities
- Maintain storage areas, utility rooms, and mechanical spaces in clean and organized condition
- Respond promptly to maintenance requests from administration and teaching staff
Heavy Machinery and Equipment Operation
- Operate heavy machinery and equipment including skid steers, mini excavators, backhoes, and forklifts as required for construction, landscaping, and site preparation work
- Conduct pre-operation inspections and basic maintenance checks on machinery before each use
- Operate all equipment safely and in compliance with OHSA requirements and manufacturer specifications
- Transport equipment between sites as required; valid DZ licence an asset for trailer operations
Renovation and Construction Support
- Provide general labour support on renovation, construction, and capital improvement projects across all properties
- Assist licensed trades and contractors on-site as directed
- Perform demolition, material handling, site cleanup, and related tasks
- Operate basic hand and power tools safely and competently
- Adhere to all applicable Ontario Building Code, OHSA, and site safety requirements
General Duties
- Set up and take down furniture, equipment, and event spaces as required
- Assist with waste management, recycling, and disposal in compliance with municipal requirements
- Maintain an inventory of tools, supplies, and equipment; report shortages or equipment issues to management
- Work collaboratively with administration, external contractors, and other staff
- Travel between multiple organizational properties as operationally required
- Perform other duties as reasonably assigned by management
Required Qualifications
- Minimum 2–3 years of experience in a similar maintenance, grounds, or general labour role
- Demonstrated experience operating heavy machinery (skid steer, excavator, backhoe, forklift, or similar); proof of training or certification required
- Experience supporting or working alongside renovation and construction projects is required
- Valid Ontario driver's licence (G class minimum) and reliable access to transportation for multi-site travel
- Valid DZ licence is a strong asset (required if operating tow vehicles or equipment trailers on public roads)
- Forklift operator certification is an asset
- Ability to safely perform physically demanding work including lifting up to 50 lbs, prolonged standing, bending, and outdoor work in all weather conditions
- Basic competency with hand and power tools and landscaping equipment
- Strong attention to detail, self-motivated, and able to work independently with minimal supervision
- Familiarity with OHSA workplace safety requirements is an asset
- First Aid / CPR certification is an asset
- Experience working in a school or childcare environment is an asset
Working Conditions
This role involves regular outdoor work across multiple properties and frequent travel between organizational sites in the Markham, Stouffville, Goodwood, Uxbridge, and Scarborough areas. The successful candidate must be comfortable working in variable weather conditions and adapting to shifting daily priorities across a busy institutional environment. Personal protective equipment will be provided as required.
