This position is open to all qualified ONA staff throughout Lakeridge Health commencing 30 July 2026 and closing at 11:59 pm on 7 August 2026.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
In partnership between LH and Durham Regional Police Services, the Mobile Crisis Intervention Team (MCIT) Registered Nurse (RN) partners with Durham Police Services officer in response to police-directed calls regarding individuals identified as experiencing emotional, psychological or psychiatric distress. The primary role of the MCIT RN is to provide collaborative community-based mental health/crisis assessment and intervention and referral to the most appropriate hospital or community services and supports. The MCIT nurse will liaise with hospital and community resources and supports as needed. In addition, the MCIT nurse and police officer(s) will participate in outreach and liaison with community partners, key stakeholders and identified significant others. All services are provided in accordance with the Standards of Practice established by the College of Nurses of Ontario and with current legislation.
- Develop and maintain an effective partnership with MCIT Police Officers and Durham Regional Police Services;
- Become familiar with range of community agencies and engage in positive working relationships with same;
- Respond to Police-identified community crisis calls regarding a person experiencing acute mental health issues with the MCIT Police Officer;
- Conduct comprehensive assessments of adults and youth experiencing a range of emotional, psychological and/or psychiatric issues including those acutely under the influence of drugs and/or alcohol with concurrent disorders;
- Engagement with family members and significant others as strengths to the individuals situation and care team;
- Develop a plan of action/care to meet the person's immediate needs based on input from multiple sources;
- Facilitate connections to mental health and justice initiative and other resources and supports and/or provide guidance to clients and their families around accessing appropriate services;
- Provide follow-up as needed to ensure the person is linked/re-linked to supportive services;
- Document the assessment, plan, intervention, consent as applicable, disposition, data and other information;
- Work collaboratively with other internal and external services, particularly the ED, Crisis Intervention Team and Psychiatrist on call;
- Engage in community outreach (e.g. participates in committees and networks related to MCIT, educates community about the MCIT program etc.) including preparing and presenting MCIT presentations;
- Participate in hospital/program quality improvement activities;
- Collect and compile program statistical information; and
- Other duties as required.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Registered Nurse with current Certificate of Registration issued by the College of Nurses;
- Baccalaureate degree in Nursing from an accredited educational institution preferred;
- Current BCLS/CPR certification;
- Current Crisis Prevention Institute (CPI) certification (or equivalent), or obtained within 6 months of hire;
- Considerable experience in acute mental health setting required;
- Exceptional skills and experience in conducting mental health assessments with associated action and treatment plans;
- Ability to speak another language an asset;
- Experience working with individuals with substance abuse and/or addictions is an asset;
- Demonstrated excellence in crisis intervention and de-escalation skills;
- Demonstrated knowledge and skills in clinical assessment and supportive counselling;
- Demonstrated ability to communicate information effectively and sensitively to both individuals and diverse groups;
- Proven competencies in problem solving, mediation and and conflict resolution;
- Knowledge of and ability to access community resources;
- Proven ability to work independently and as a member of a multidisciplinary team;
- Proven ability to work effectively with persons (i.e Police Officers) whose role and perspective are different;
- Demonstrated knowledge of relevant legislation, including the Mental Health Act, PHIPA, HCCA;
- Sound knowledge of the principles of the therapeutic relationship and their application to crisis intervention;
- Demonstrates excellent organizational and time-management skills;
- Demonstrates excellent team building skills;
- Demonstrates initiative and the ability to function both independently and as a multidisciplinary team member in a fast paced demanding environment;
- Demonstrated exceptional interpersonal, communication and leadership skills;
- Proficiency in computer skills;
- Ability to fulfill the physical demands of a mobile crisis nurse;
- Demonstrated commitment to continual learning;
