Position Summary
We are seeking a Communication Disorder Assistant (CDA) to join the Brain Injury Rehab team (BIRT) in delivering exceptional rehabilitation services to children and youth. The brain injury rehab team serves clients aged 3 months to 18 years who require rehabilitation following an acquired brain injury. The goal of the program is to enable children and youth with brain injuries to recover as fully as possible and return to their homes, schools and communities. Clients of the brain injury rehab program can be seen for intensive inpatient or day patient assessment and/or therapy, by various rehab professionals.
This is a regular full-time (1.0 FTE - 37.5 hours/week) onsite position at 150 Kilgour Rd. East York, ON M4G 1R8.
Key Responsibilities
- Provides client and family-centred care which is goal directed, evidence based and outcome oriented
- Respects the client/family’s rights to make decisions based on their own values, beliefs and experiences
- Carries out the Speech-Language Pathology designated programs to individual clients or groups of clients who are being seen for augmentative and alternative communication and documents client progress
- Provides client and family-centred care based on direction provided by the Speech-Language Pathologist and in accordance with established policies and procedures
- Develops materials for use with individual clients
- Participates in on-the-job training and continuing education/professional development where appropriate
- Documents accurate workload statistics
- Collects relevant data as directed by the Speech-Language Pathologist
- Maintains clean, safe equipment and materials and assists in reviewing inventory
- Attends and participates in staff meetings
- Participates in quality management activities
- Communicates in a timely and effective manner with team members and clients
- Provides client/caregiver training, follow-up and equipment preparation under the supervision of the primary clinician
- Identifies practice issues and participates in their resolution with the clinical staff
- Adheres to Charting Guideline, Speech-Language Pathology Documentation Guidelines and the Ontario College of Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology Standards of Practice
- Participates in research activities as applicable
- Utilizes research information to support evidence based practice
- Participates in quality improvement initiatives, supports the maintenance of a safe and healthy work environment and advances a culture of client/patient safety through work and daily practices
- Other duties as assigned
Qualifications
- Graduate of a Communicative Disorders Assistant program
- Previous job related experience required (or practicum experience for new graduates)
- Experience working with children with physical and developmental disabilities preferred
- Experience working in a an interdisciplinary setting is preferred
- Familiarity and experience with Augmentative and Alternative Communication systems, specialized hardware and software preferred
- Strong organizational, problem-solving, verbal, written and interpersonal skills
- Self directed learner who demonstrates initiative
- Ability to effectively and efficiently manage fluctuating clinical responsibilities
- Knowledge of speech, language and communication strategies for intervention and training
- Ability to modify delivery of program activities based on client’s interest and abilities
- Valid driver’s license and access to a reliable vehicle required for travel in the community
- Willingness to work in a variety of regions including Toronto, Durham, York and Simcoe as required
