Equity Rentals Ltd. is a privately owned real estate and property management company based in Grande Prairie, Alberta. Our Finance Team also supports accounting and financial operations across a variety of other business ventures.
We are looking for an experienced accounting professional to join our Finance Team in the newly created position of Assistant Controller.
This is not simply a senior accounting position. We are looking for someone who wants to understand the full financial operation of the businesses, become a key resource to our Finance Team and grow into a larger financial leadership role.
The Role
Reporting to the Controller, the Assistant Controller will cross-train throughout the Finance Team to develop a thorough knowledge of the positions and financial processes currently handled by the team. The goal is to understand not only how each process is completed, but how the individual pieces work together within the overall financial operation.
Once trained, the Assistant Controller will provide day-to-day oversight and support to the Finance Team under the direction of the Controller, while also taking on increasingly complex accounting, reporting and financial responsibilities.
This will be a hands-on position. The successful candidate must be comfortable moving between detailed transactional work, staff support and review, problem solving, reconciliations, financial reporting and higher-level accounting responsibilities.
Responsibilities will include:
- Cross-training in all Finance Team positions, responsibilities and processes
- Developing a thorough understanding of the accounting cycles, systems and internal processes for the various companies and business operations
- Providing day-to-day guidance, support and oversight to Finance Team members
- Reviewing accounting work for accuracy, completeness and consistency
- Assisting with month-end and year-end accounting processes
- Preparing and reviewing reconciliations, working papers and financial reports
- Identifying unusual transactions, discrepancies and accounting issues and following them through to resolution
- Supporting cash flow management, budgeting and financial analysis
- Assisting with internal controls and the continued development and improvement of financial processes
- Working with external accountants, financial institutions and other professional advisors as required
- Taking a hands-on role in more complex accounting and financial matters
- Providing backup and coverage within the Finance Team when required
- Gradually assuming additional Controller-level responsibilities as knowledge and experience within the organization develops
Who We Are Looking For
The right person will have strong accounting knowledge, but equally important will be their ability and willingness to learn the operation from the ground up.
We are looking for someone who:
- Has strong practical accounting experience and understands the full accounting cycle
- Is comfortable learning and working directly within detailed accounting processes rather than only reviewing the work of others
- Can move easily between detailed work and higher-level financial analysis
- Has experience reviewing the work of others and providing guidance to accounting staff
- Is organized and able to manage multiple companies, priorities and deadlines
- Has strong analytical and problem-solving skills
- Notices when something does not make sense and takes the initiative to determine why
- Can document, improve and maintain financial processes and controls
- Communicates clearly and works well as part of a collaborative team
- Is comfortable working in a privately owned, entrepreneurial environment where businesses and priorities continue to evolve
- Is interested in developing into a broader financial leadership role
Education and Experience
We are looking for a strong combination of accounting education, senior-level accounting experience and demonstrated practical ability.
Experience in private business, property management, real estate, construction or a multi-company environment would be considered an asset.
Previous experience as an Assistant Controller, Accounting Manager, Senior Accountant or similar position would be well suited to this role.
The Opportunity
Our Finance Team has established processes and a strong working structure. We are now looking to add another level of financial leadership to the Finance Team, working closely with the Controller.
For the right person, this position is intended to grow. As the successful candidate develops a comprehensive understanding of our financial operations and demonstrates the ability to lead them, we anticipate the role gradually assuming greater responsibility for the day-to-day financial operations and developing into the Controller position.
This is a full-time position based in Grande Prairie, Alberta.
We offer competitive compensation, a friendly and professional work environment, and the opportunity to become an important part of a growing and evolving business environment.

If this opportunity sounds like a good fit for your experience and career goals, please submit a detailed resume along with a cover letter explaining why you believe you would be the right person for this role. Please also include your salary expectations.
