Thunder Bay Pulp & Paper is a leading northern bleached softwood kraft pulp and power producer. Located on Lake Superior, the Thunder Bay mill has been a landmark company of northwestern Ontario since 1919. In August 2023, Atlas Holdings established Thunder Bay Pulp & Paper as an independent pulp and paper operation, joining Atlas’ global family of manufacturing and distribution businesses.

The Recovery Superintendent will be responsible to maintain the efficient operation of the recovery process to support our kraftmill operations. The Recovery process includes recovery boiler, evaporation and stripping systems, tall oil, and turpentine recovery. The ideal candidate for this existing vacancy will possess the drive and passion to continuously improve upon the health and safety, efficiency and cost targets for the site.
This leadership role demands sound decision making and negotiation abilities as well as supervisory experience in a unionized environment. Preference will be given to candidates with an engineering degree or 2nd or 3rd Class power engineer certificate.
Your Profile:
· Candidates must have a 2nd Class power engineer certificate and previous industrial experience.
· Excellent communicator, insightful, self-aware, and able to listen to employees and integrate feedback into the operations. Strong belief in continuous improvement.
· Demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
· Excellent organizational skills including planning, prioritizing, and delegating.
· Strong computer skills including MS Office.
· Candidates must be able to legally work within Canada at the time of applying for the position.
Your primary responsibilities will include the following:
· Ensure the facility operates in full compliance with all health, safety, and environmental laws and regulations ensuring all employees are held accountable for our safety and environmental systems.
· Lead the Department team to successfully achieve its targets with respect to health and safety, operational priorities, production rates and manufacturing costs.
· Develop, coordinate and implement training programs given the demographics of the team to maintain and improve upon quality, efficiency and capital upgrades.
· Participate in monthly operation/budget reviews and will maintain an active and open dialogue with the union to promote continuous improvement within the department.
· Build a positive relationship between the Utilities Department and Maintenance Department.
Your team:
Reporting to the Utilities Manager, you will be part of a results-oriented team whose members are encouraged to exceed expectations.
Work alongside other department superintendents and process engineers and the rest of the Utilities Management Team and Shift Superintendents.
Compensation:
This is a salary position in the $100,000 to $140,000 range depending upon experience plus an annual bonus and relocation assistance along with a comprehensive medical, dental vision care and medical benefits along with vacation and defined benefit pension plan with CAAT.
