Hummingbird Drones is a BC-based company that has been helping detect and fight
wildfires since 2014. Over the past decade, we've grown into one of Canada's leading drone
service providers - and in 2023, we launched Nova, our wildfire intelligence SaaS platform,
to bring that same expertise directly to public safety agencies around the world. Today, Nova
is trusted by agencies across Canada, the United States, New Zealand, and Australia,
helping them turn drone programs into true force multipliers. We build tools that make a
real-world impact, and we care deeply about doing it right. Our team is tight-knit, driven, and
always pushing the boundaries of what's possible.
We're looking for a Mobile Developer to join our engineering team and help build the apps
that connect our drone hardware to the Nova platform. You'll work closely with product,
design, and firmware engineers to ship features that agency field crews rely on in real
operational conditions. This role owns our cross-platform app end-to-end, from device
integrations to release, and has a clear path to grow in scope as the mobile team grows.
You're comfortable working across the mobile app stack: native device integrations, app
architecture, performance, and the day-to-day discipline of shipping reliable software. This is
an on-site role based out of our Victoria, BC office. We're looking for someone who wants to
build in person, side by side with the team, and is eager to join a fast-paced start-up.
Compensation:
The base salary for this role is $95,000–$130,000 CAD, based on experience. We offer
dental and extended health benefits, with the option for equity following successful
completion of probation.
Responsibilities:
- Design, build, and ship features across our iOS and Android apps using a shared cross-platform codebase (React Native)
- Integrate with device APIs (Bluetooth, GPS, camera, background location, push notifications) to support real-time drone telemetry and control
- Work with backend and firmware teams to define and consume APIs, ensuring reliable data sync between mobile, cloud, and hardware
- Own features end-to-end: technical design, implementation, testing, release, and monitoring in production
- Improve app performance, stability, and offline behaviour, particularly in field conditions with unreliable connectivity
- Write clean, tested, maintainable code and participate in code review
- Contribute to CI/CD pipelines and release processes for the mobile app(s)
- Collaborate with product and design to turn requirements into polished, usable interfaces
- Troubleshoot and resolve production issues reported by field users and customer success
- Mentor junior developers and help raise the bar on mobile engineering practices as the team grows
Qualifications:
- 1+ years of professional mobile development experience, including production apps built with React Native or Flutter
- Strong understanding of mobile app architecture, state management, and performance optimization
- Experience integrating native device capabilities (Bluetooth/BLE, GPS/location services, camera, sensors), a strong plus
- Comfort working with REST APIs and asynchronous data handling
- Familiarity with native iOS (Swift) and/or Android (Kotlin) fundamentals, even if day-to-day work is cross-platform
- Experience with automated testing (unit, integration, and/or end-to-end) for mobile apps
- Understanding of app store release processes (App Store Connect, Google Play Console)
- Strong communication skills and comfort collaborating in person with a small, cross-functional team
- Based in or willing to relocate to the Victoria, BC area for this onsite role
Why Work With Us:
We think this is a pretty special place to work. Here's why:
- You'll be part of a mission-driven company doing work that genuinely saves lives - not just moving metrics
- You'll build in person, side-by-side with a tight-knit team in our Victoria office, where ideas move fast, and collaboration happens face-to-face
- Flexible schedule - we care about outcomes, not hours
- You'll have real autonomy and ownership over your work, with a leadership team that trusts you and gets out of your way
- You'll have creative freedom and the mentorship to grow your skills - this role has a real growth path
- You'll work with a talented, driven team that's genuinely excited about what they're building
- Regular team meet-ups and events - we work hard together and celebrate together too
- There are dogs in the office. They are really, really good dogs.
Interview Process:
We keep our process straightforward and respectful of your time. Here's what to expect:
- Phone Pre-Screen - A brief call with a member of our hiring team to learn more about your background and answer any initial questions you may have.
- Technical Interview - A conversation and hands-on exercise with our development team to dig into your experience and problem-solving approach.
- In-Person Interview - A deeper conversation with the team to discuss your experience, goals, and how you'd contribute.
We aim to get back to all candidates within one week of each stage. Regardless of the outcome, you will always hear from us directly.
How to Apply:
Please send us
- Your cover letter telling us why you'd be a great fit for this role and team
- Your resume
- A link to apps you've shipped, or a portfolio/open-source sample, if you have one
- And answer these quick questions (there is no wrong answer!):
○Tell us about a mobile feature you're proud of shipping. What made it hard,
and how did you solve it?
○ Tell us about a time you had to debug a tricky issue involving hardware or
device integration. What was your approach?
Please submit your application to [email protected].
Due to the volume of applications we receive, we will only be reaching out to candidates who
have been selected to move forward to the first stage of our interview process. We
appreciate your interest and thank you for taking the time to apply.
