Position Summary
Calgary Paving Ltd. is seeking an experienced Asphalt Roller Operator to join our paving crews. The successful candidate must have at least two years of hands-on experience operating asphalt rollers on residential driveways and commercial paving projects.
This is not an entry-level position. We are looking for an operator who understands asphalt compaction, rolling patterns, temperature management, joint construction, grade control and finish quality. The operator must be able to achieve proper density while producing a smooth surface without checking, cracking, shoving, roller marks or damage to asphalt edges.
Responsibilities
- Operate double-drum vibratory, combination and other asphalt rollers.
- Compact asphalt on residential driveways, commercial parking lots, pathways, overlays, repairs, tie-ins and new-construction projects.
- Select and follow appropriate rolling patterns based on asphalt temperature, lift thickness, mix type, site conditions and project requirements.
- Perform breakdown, intermediate and finish rolling as assigned.
- Maintain proper speed, vibration, amplitude, overlap and direction of travel.
- Monitor asphalt temperature and coordinate rolling activities with the paver operator, rakers and foreman.
- Achieve uniform compaction without creating roller marks, cracking, shoving, checking or surface irregularities.
- Compact joints, edges, tie-ins, entrances and confined areas carefully.
- Avoid damaging curbs, concrete, catch basins, landscaping, garage slabs, buildings and other site features.
- Identify soft areas, drainage concerns, uneven grades and other workmanship issues.
- Conduct daily equipment inspections and report mechanical or safety concerns.
- Maintain roller water systems, scrapers, spray systems and other operating components.
- Keep assigned equipment clean, fuelled and ready for operation.
- Assist with loading, unloading and transporting equipment when authorized.
- Perform general paving, cleanup and labour duties when the roller is not operating.
- Follow Calgary Paving’s safety procedures and all applicable workplace requirements.
- Represent Calgary Paving professionally at residential and commercial properties.
Required Qualifications
- Minimum of two years of professional asphalt roller operating experience.
- Demonstrated roller experience on both residential driveways and commercial paving projects.
- Experience operating double-drum vibratory asphalt rollers.
- Strong understanding of asphalt temperatures, rolling patterns, compaction and finish quality.
- Ability to work close to edges, structures and other equipment without causing damage.
- Ability to recognize and correct roller marks, checking, shoving and uneven compaction.
- Valid driver’s licence is mandatory.
- Clean driving record and ability to provide a satisfactory driver’s abstract.
- Reliable transportation to Calgary Paving’s shop or assigned meeting location.
- Ability to safely perform physically demanding outdoor work for extended periods.
- Willingness to work long hours, early mornings, evenings and occasional weekends during the paving season.
- Dependable, punctual and able to communicate effectively with the paving crew.
- Legally entitled to work in Canada.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience operating combination rollers, plate compactors and trench rollers.
- Experience with residential acreage driveways, commercial parking lots, overlays, repairs and pathways.
- Experience operating skid steers, pavers or other asphalt equipment.
- Knowledge of asphalt-density requirements and compaction testing.
- Experience loading, unloading and securing equipment.
- Driver’s licence.
- CSTS, WHMIS, First Aid or other relevant safety certifications.
