Spindle Stairs & Railings is looking for a detail-oriented AutoCAD Stair Design Technician / Field & Production Coordinator to join our Stair Division.
This is a hands-on technical position combining AutoCAD design, blueprint reading, field measurements, work-order preparation, production coordination and job-site problem-solving.
You will help take construction-grade stair projects from the original blueprint through design, manufacturing and delivery.
This is not a position where you will sit behind a computer all day. You will work in the office, visit new-home construction sites and communicate directly with our production team.

Position Summary
Reporting to the Stair Division Manager, you will design construction-grade stairs using AutoCAD, complete stair takeoffs from blueprints, measure stair openings on residential construction sites and coordinate work orders with our production team.
You will also act as the first point of contact when construction-grade stair issues arise on site.
Your goal will be to ensure each staircase is accurately designed, properly documented, built on schedule and delivered to the correct job site.
Key Responsibilities
Stair Design and Blueprint Review
- Design construction-grade stairs using AutoCAD.
- Create stair drawings from architectural blueprints or field measurements.
- Read and interpret residential construction drawings, elevations and stair details.
- Complete stair takeoffs from builder plans.
- Review floor-to-floor heights, stair openings, landings and wall locations.
- Identify missing information, drawing conflicts or potential construction issues.
- Revise stair drawings when plans or site conditions change.
- Confirm drawings are complete and accurate before production begins.
Field Measurements and Site Support
- Visit Calgary-area new-home construction sites.
- Measure construction-grade stair openings and confirm site conditions.
- Compare field measurements with architectural drawings.
- Record accurate dimensions, elevations and relevant construction details.
- Communicate professionally with site supervisors, builders and trades.
- Act as the first point of contact for construction-grade stair site issues.
- Help investigate and resolve measurement, design, production or delivery concerns.
Production Coordination
- Create work orders for labour, materials and stair components.
- Assign work orders to the appropriate production team members.
- Communicate project requirements and priorities to production.
- Coordinate stair manufacturing and delivery schedules.
- Track projects as they move through design, production and delivery.
- Update production when measurements, drawings, timelines or priorities change.
- Ensure production has the correct information before manufacturing begins.
- Provide technical clarification when questions arise.

- Potential issues are caught before they become expensive problems.

Qualifications
- Basic to mid-level AutoCAD experience.
- Ability to read and interpret residential construction blueprints.
- Familiarity with the new-home construction industry.
- Experience completing construction measurements or material takeoffs.
- Good computer and administrative skills.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Strong organizational and problem-solving abilities.
- Comfortable working with measurements, fractions, elevations and construction terminology.
- Able to manage multiple projects, revisions and deadlines.
- Comfortable working in an office, production shop and active construction environment.
- Valid Alberta driver’s licence.
- Ability to travel to job sites throughout Calgary and surrounding communities.
Preferred Experience
The following experience would be considered an asset:
- Construction-grade stair design or manufacturing.
- Residential framing or carpentry.
- Millwork, cabinetry or building-material production.
- Residential site measurements.
- Production scheduling or work-order coordination.
- Working directly with builders and site supervisors.
You do not need to know everything about stairs when you begin. We will train the right person on our stair-design, manufacturing and production systems.
You do need to bring attention to detail, accountability, common sense and a willingness to learn.

Schedule
- Monday to Friday.
- Day shifts.
- Occasional early job-site visits may be required.
