Position Overview
We are seeking a skilled and driven Electrical Engineer specializing in power systems design to join our growing team. The successful candidate will play a key role in the design, analysis, and delivery of power distribution systems across a variety of industrial and commercial projects. This role demands a thorough command of power engineering fundamentals, hands-on design experience, and the ability to collaborate across multi-disciplinary project teams.
Duties
- Power Systems Design & Analysis
- Develop and analyze load lists and single-line drawings (SLDs) for power distribution systems.
- Size power cables and overcurrent protection devices for diverse load types including motors, variable frequency drives (VFDs), lighting panels, and transformers.
- Design grounding systems in accordance with applicable codes and project standards.
- Perform load flow, short-circuit, and arc-flash studies for LV and MV distribution systems using industry-standard software tools.
Equipment Design & Technical Specifications
- Design and develop technical specifications for switchgear, power distribution panels, and motor control centres (MCCs).
- Prepare specifications for LV and MV variable frequency drives (VFDs) and power transformers.
- Review and approve vendor submittals and shop drawings for electrical power equipment.
- Coordinate with procurement and vendors to ensure equipment compliance with project specifications.
Project Execution & Coordination
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary engineering teams including mechanical, instrumentation, and civil/structural.
- Support project managers in the planning and execution of electrical engineering deliverables.
- Participate in design reviews, hazard assessments (HAZOP/HAZID), and constructability reviews.
- Provide technical support during equipment factory acceptance testing (FAT), site acceptance testing (SAT), and commissioning.
Documentation & Quality
- Ensure all designs comply with applicable Canadian Electrical Code (CEC), NEC, IEEE, IEC, and NEMA standards.
- Maintain accurate and organized engineering documentation, drawings, and calculations.
- Support internal quality assurance reviews and contribute to continuous improvement of design standards.
Required Qualifications
Education
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering from an accredited university.
- Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) designation in Canada, or eligibility to obtain licensure, is an asset.
Experience
- Minimum 6 to 8 years of progressive experience in electrical power systems design within industrial, oil & gas, mining, or infrastructure sectors.
- Demonstrated experience developing and analyzing load lists and single-line drawings.
- Proven expertise in sizing power cables and selecting overcurrent protection for motors, VFDs, lighting panels, transformers, and other load types.
- Solid experience designing and writing technical specifications for switchgear, distribution panels, MCCs, LV/MV VFDs, and transformers.
- Strong working knowledge of grounding system design principles and applications.
Technical Skills
- Proficiency in power system analysis software such as ETAP, EasyPower, or PowerSKM for load flow, short-circuit, and arc-flash studies (preferred).
- Familiarity with AutoCAD, or equivalent CAD/design tools.
- Sound understanding of applicable electrical codes and standards including CEC, NEC, IEEE, IEC, and NEMA.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with power system modelling and analysis using ETAP, EasyPower, or PowerSKM.
- Exposure to both LV (< 1 kV) and MV (1 kV – 35 kV) distribution system design.
- Previous involvement in commissioning and startup activities for large-scale electrical installations.
- Familiarity with hazardous area classification and intrinsically safe design principles.
