Job Description: The Laundry Aide is responsible for maintaining supplies of clean linens and clothing to residents to meet the needs of the Home and its residents and to comply with Ministry requirements
Essential responsibilities
- Demonstrate Chatham-Kent’s core values and competencies
- Responsible for performing all duties in adherence to the guidelines and regulations of the Occupational Health and Safety Act, Fixing Long-Term Care Act, and the policies and procedures of Riverview Gardens, Municipality of Chatham-Kent, as well as the Ministry of Long-Term Care
- Responsible for the operation of all equipment that pertains to the Laundry Department
- Operate commercial laundry equipment following manufacturer's directions and municipal policies and procedures
- Collect laundry from the linen chute hourly, sort, weigh, wash and dry laundry as required, or as directed by the Supervisor, Environmental Services
- Distribute linens and clothing following the established procedures to avoid the spread of infection
- Label personal items with residents’ names when requested
- Report all repairs to maintenance via the work order program, report all needed inventory to Supervisor
- Responsible for safe handling and storage of all chemicals within the Laundry Department
- Responsible for communicating any concerns expressed by residents, families and staff to the Registered staff responsible for resident floor
- In the absence of the Supervisor or designate, report to the Registered staff responsible for the resident floor
- Maintain work area and equipment in a clean and hazard-free manner, following established procedures to avoid the spread of infection
- Assist in orientation of new employees into the department, as required
Essential qualifications
- Secondary School Diploma or equivalent education (e.g. GED Certificate) required
- Healthcare experience in laundry preferred
- Knowledge of laundry process, chemicals and industrial washing machines and dryers preferred
- Knowledge of infection prevention and control
- Strong customer service skills
Other qualifications:
- Long Term Care experience an asset
- Member of Ontario Hospital Association or Ontario Healthcare Housekeepers' Association courses an asset
- Basic computer skills, specifically Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook)
- Excellent communication skills, written and verbal
Certifications, memberships and licenses
- Health and Safety certification an asset
Work environment/hours of work
- This position works mostly indoors
- This position will work day shifts (Monday to Sunday) with occasional afternoon or evening shifts based on need
- This position is call-in, some scheduled hours and may have short notice call-in hours for day, afternoon and weekend hours, which may include 4 hour shifts
Background check requirements
This position works with vulnerable residents in a position of trust and authority, on a sustained and regular basis, in a largely unsupervised capacity. A Vulnerable Sector Screen is required (Fixing Long-Term Care Act section 252
- Reg. 246/22) prior to being accepted for employment. You must be 18 years of age or older to obtain a vulnerable police check.
All staff members shall promptly provide the employer with a signed declaration disclosing new charges, convictions, orders and restraining orders, consistent with Ontario Regulation section 253 O. Reg 246/22 made under the Fixing Long-Term Care Act, with respect to the period since the date the person’s last criminal reference check under subsection (2) was conducted.
Essential physical and/or safety requirements
- Annual Flu immunization is required
- Under the Fixing Long-Term Care Act, all employees are required to provide evidence of, or submit to, a 2-step TB skin test
- Requires non-slip footwear
- Ability to lift 23 kg (50 lbs) and withstand long periods of walking, standing and frequent bending
- Ability to work on a daily basis with chemicals, cleaners or detergents as required
- Physically able to deliver full linen carts, move full laundry bins, load and unload washers and driers
- Bending: frequent twisting; constant stooping (up to 22.73 kgs or 50 lbs) (collects laundry from the linen chute hourly and as needed; sorts and weighs laundry in laundry carts; loads washers from cart, unloads laundry from washers onto carts, loads dryer, removes laundry from dryers onto a cart when washing and drying cycles are complete)
- Walking: frequent balancing; constant walking on level surface (up to 22.73 kgs or 50 lbs) (collects laundry from the linen chute hourly and as needed; distributes linens and clothing appropriate floors)
- Sitting: frequent sitting on a stool (up to 4.55 kgs or 10 lbs) (stool available for staff to sit on when folding laundry (i.e. modified work assignment)
- Reaching: constant reaching below shoulder, forward, backward, handling (up to 22.73 kgs or 50 lbs) (sorts and weighs laundry in laundry carts; collects laundry from the linen chute hourly and as needed; sorts and weighs laundry in laundry carts; loads washers from cart, unloads laundry from washers onto carts, loads dryer, removes laundry from dryers onto a cart when washing and drying cycles are complete; folds laundry, places on linen/personal carts)
- Lifting: constant lifting waist to shoulder, pushing below shoulder, pulling below shoulder (up to 22.73 kgs or 50 lbs) (collects laundry from the linen chute hourly and as needed; sorts and weighs laundry in laundry carts; collects laundry from the linen chute hourly and as needed; sorts and weighs laundry in laundry carts; loads washers from cart, unloads laundry from washers onto carts, loads dryer, removes laundry from dryers onto a cart when washing and drying cycles are complete; folds laundry, places on linen/personal carts; distributes linens and clothing appropriate floors)
- Standing: constant standing inside (up to 4.55 kgs or 10 lbs) (folds laundry, places on linen/personal carts; prolonged standing position when folding laundry; uses machine to label items (clothes, blankets, etc.))
- Hands: frequent fine finger dexterity (movement), pinching (up to 4.55 kgs or 10 lbs) (collects laundry from the linen chute hourly and as needed; loads washers from cart, unloads laundry from washers onto carts, loads dryer, removes laundry from dryers onto a cart when washing and drying cycles are complete; folds laundry, places on linen/personal carts; communication via email)
Benefits
As per the UNIFOR (RVG) (2022-2024) collective agreement, this permanent casual position would receive $19.92 - $26.92 per hour in addition to 15% in lieu of benefits and 4% vacation pay
