Company Description

Mission is located on the unceded, ancestral, and shared territory of the Stó:lō Peoples, specifically on Leq’á:mel, Semá:th, Máthexwi, Kwantlen, Sq’éwlets, and Katzie traditional territories in the lower mainland of BC. Nestled on the southern coastal mountain slopes overlooking the lush Fraser River Valley, Mission is a rapidly growing and dynamic community of approximately 41,500 residents, 20 kilometers north of the US border and 70 kilometers east of Vancouver. Although Mission is part of a broader metropolitan area, it still maintains its distinct and welcoming small-town flavor.

Job Description

The City of Mission is seeking a Facilities Operations Technician to join our Facilities team. This position performs a variety of skilled maintenance and operational tasks at facilities operated by the Parks, Recreation & Culture department, including the ice arena, pool, and related public service, administrative, and multi-purpose areas. Duties vary according to seasonal demands and facility operations and include ice installation and maintenance, pool maintenance and operation, janitorial and custodial services, and building and equipment maintenance.

The successful candidate will operate, maintain, and perform repairs on a variety of ice-making, resurfacing and refrigeration equipment as well as HVAC, electrical, plumbing, and filtration systems, while monitoring and recording the operation of the arena refrigeration plant fully conversant with all emergency procedures. Responsibilities also include performing building repairs, cleaning and disinfecting public areas, setting up rooms for meetings and rentals, maintaining facility security, responding to alarms and emergencies, completing grounds maintenance including snow and ice removal, and assisting facility users and community groups.

This position also participates in the training and assessment of new staff, contributes to the development and implementation of policies and procedures, maintains records and reports, and provides excellent customer service to staff, external agencies, user groups, and the public. The ideal candidate will have thorough knowledge of ice-making and facility maintenance operations, pool systems, refrigeration equipment, janitorial practices, building trades, and applicable safety regulations. Strong communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills are essential, along with the ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.

Qualifications

The preferred candidate will have Grade 12 graduation or equivalent, supplemented by a recognized Building Service Worker course, Power Engineer course, and Pool Operator certification, along with a minimum of two years of experience in ice making and facility operations and maintenance. Required certifications include Refrigeration Operator Certification (or acceptable equivalent Power Engineer Certification), Building Service Worker Certificate, Pool Operator Level 1 and 2 Certificates, Basic First Aid, and a valid Class 5 BC Driver’s Licence.

Additional Information

The hours of work for this full-time position are Thursday to Sunday* from 3:30pm to 1am (4-day work week).

The City of Mission offers a collaborative and team-oriented work environment, competitive compensation, and a comprehensive benefits package upon completion of the probationary period. The current 2025 rate of pay for this position is $35.84 per hour plus the afternoon shift premium of 6%. A proposed increase to $38.42 per hour** is currently under review and would take effect if approved by the union. This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced facilities professional to play a key role in maintaining safe, high-quality recreation facilities for the community.

We are seeking a qualified candidate for the Facilities Operations Technician position; however, applicants who are interested but do not yet fully meet the qualifications are still encouraged to apply. The successful candidate may be appointed to a lower Facilities Operations Attendant classification while gaining the education, training, and experience needed to progress to the Facilities Operations Technician level.
