The Lead Refrigeration Technician is responsible for supporting the safe, efficient and compliant operation of the facility's ammonia refrigeration and related utility systems. This role provides day-to-day technical leadership, guidance and support to the Refrigeration and Engineering team.
The Lead Refrigeration Technician acts as a key technical resource and supports the coordination of maintenance, troubleshooting, inspections and operational requirements related to refrigeration and facility systems. This individual works collaboratively with the Engineering team, Operations and other cross-functional departments to support safe, reliable and efficient plant operations.
The Lead Refrigeration Technician is a hands-on, proactive leader who supports continuous improvement, promotes a strong safety and food safety culture, and provides guidance and coaching to team members.
KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES:
1. Promotes a culture where Health and Safety is the number one priority and supports Health and Safety initiatives within the department.
2. Provides day-to-day technical leadership and guidance to the Refrigeration and Engineering team, supporting safe and efficient plant operations.
3. Supports the safe operation, monitoring and maintenance of the company's ammonia refrigeration system and related utility equipment in a manner that minimizes disruption to production and promotes employee safety.
4. Develop and implement maintenance procedures to enhance efficiency and reduce downtime
5. Supports compliance with applicable Technical Standards and Safety Authority (TSSA) requirements, regulations, codes and standards, as well as company Health and Safety, Quality and Food Safety policies and procedures.
6. Acts as a technical resource for troubleshooting, equipment operation, repairs and corrective actions related to refrigeration and facility systems.
7. Ensure plant standards are met in the performance of planned maintenance. Make changes to PM tasks as necessary.
8. Use CMMS system to co-ordinate planned work within the department. Ensure that all major breakdown and planned work is recorded in the CMMS system
9. Co-operate with all other Manufacturing, Human Resources, Finance, Logistics, Safety and Quality Assurance colleagues in the performance of their duties to ensure optimal manufacturing results.
10. Optimize maintenance resources to stay within the annual labour budget
11. Lead and manage cross-functional project teams to deliver projects on time and within scope
12. Monitor project progress, identify risks, and implement mitigation strategies
13. Responsible for holding and tracking all factory keys.
14. Cross functional Support including all other duties as assigned
POSITION REQUIREMENTS:
- Experience with ammonia refrigeration systems
- Must hold a valid Class B Refrigeration Operator certificate/licence or higher (Class A) recognized in Ontario.
- Commitment to health and safety in the workplace
- In depth knowledge of provincial regulations regarding refrigeration building and fire code, elevating devices, local bylaws, environmental, labor, and health and safety legislation.
- Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal
- Ability to quickly understand and identify issues and implement solutions.
- Demonstrated ability to provide technical leadership, guidance and coaching to team members.
