Full job description

Common Purpose:

Eagle’s Nest Stoney Family Shelter (Eagle’s Nest) is an organization with a mission to provide an immediate response to victims of family violence in the form of safe shelter, food, clothing, childcare, and individual and group counselling. Eagle’s Nest supports clients' self-worth and ensures that all clients are cared for in ways that respect human dignity and worth. Eagle’s Nest believes that all people have a right to live free from actual or threatened violence and abuse.

The common purpose of all employees of Eagle’s Nest includes a responsibility to embrace the mission and beliefs, and to respect clients' dignity and confidentiality. Employees must work professionally and adhere to the Stoney Tribal Administration Staff Regulations and Eagle’s Nest Stoney Family Shelter Policies and Procedures. All employees are expected to contribute to a positive and supportive workplace environment, take accountability for their practice, and employ collaboration and thoughtfulness in decision-making.

Job Summary:

Reporting to the Director of Eagle’s Nest, the primary role of the Relief-Client Support Worker is to replace Client Support Workers when needed. The Relief Worker ensures that women and children in crisis are safe and provides assistance, support, information, referrals, advocacy, and counselling to residents or potential residents of Eagle’s Nest Shelter.

This is an on-call position on the Eagle’s Nest Stoney Family Shelter team. Eagle’s Nest is a 24/7 operation, and shift work is necessary. Shift times vary and include weekends and holidays.

Tasks, Duties and Responsibilities:

· Responds to the demands for emergency drop-ins, crisis intervention, crisis phone calls, assessment, and referrals

· Assesses the service needs of clients seeking assistance using the appropriate tools

· Completes shelter intakes and danger assessments for clients who wish to access services

· Develops safety plans with callers and residents

· Supports shelter clients with counselling, safety planning, case planning, and community information and referrals as needed

· Develops goals and intervention plans with residents

· Creates case management plans with all clients

· Maintains up-to-date notes and documentation for client contact consistent with agency policies and standards

· Maintains records, statistics, and data collection as required

· Provides non-judgmental emotional support to clients

· Meets with clients daily to discuss their needs and concerns

· Interacts with clients on a continuous basis

· Liaises with different agencies, if required, to support the client

· Advocates for and assists clients in working with appropriate agencies

· Facilitates in-house workshops with clients

· Conducts daily group sessions with clients

· Alerts supervisor and other counsellors when a security alert is necessary

· Coordinates and oversees and coordinates daily activity within the shelter

· Ensures the physical needs of food, shelter, and safety are provided for the women and children admitted into Eagle’s Nest

· Orients new residents by providing a tour of the facility, reviewing house rules and available services in the shelter, and encourages the use of the programs offered

· Ensures the safety of clients and staff by screening telephone calls and persons who enter the shelter

· Ensures that medical information is documented and information is given to appropriate staff, such as giving dietary information to the cook

· Ensures clients have the necessary medical treatment if necessary

· Maintains and documents secure storage and handling of prescribed and non-prescribed medications are stored in a locked cabinet

· Ensures that nutritious meals are provided for the clients in the absence of a cook

· Performs house security checks

· Transports clients to and from the shelter for important appointments when a driver is not available

· Maintains cleanliness of shelter, including laundry duties as required

· Ensures up to date knowledge of resource available for clients

· Ensures the confidentiality of all activities and clients within the shelter are respected and upheld

· Is aware of policies, procedures, mandates, mission and philosophy and how they should be implemented and adhered to

· Participates in staff meetings and trainings as required

· Participates in fundraising and awareness activities

· Participates in supervision, annual performance review and organization planning

· Performs other related duties as assigned by the Director

Education, Skills & Qualifications:

A Social Work diploma or equivalent education preferred
A minimum of one year of related work experience
Strong crisis intervention skills
Excellent organizational skills
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Good computer skills, adaptable to new programs
Group facilitation skills
Strong ability to maintain clear professional boundaries
Knowledge of Stoney family culture and values
Knowledge of community resources available for clients
Knowledge of the dynamics of family violence
Sensitive to the needs of women and children in crisis
Understanding of issues of mental health, poverty, and addictions
Self-awareness and a positive outlook
Willingness to participate in professional development, self-reflection, and continued growth
Ability to work in a team environment as well as independently
Ability to work shift work
Ability to work on short notice
Must have a reliable vehicle
Must be chemical- and substance-free
Must be able to abide by SNN Staff Regulations, Eagle’s Nest Policies, and a strict Confidentiality agreement
First Aid / CPR certificate an asset
ASIST Suicide Intervention training an asset
Vulnerable Sector check and Child and Family Intervention Record check are conditions of employment
