The Safety Superintendent is responsible for leading and overseeing health, safety, and training initiatives across assigned mining operations. This role ensures compliance with regulatory requirements, company policies, client expectations, and industry best practices while fostering a strong safety culture throughout the organization. The Safety Superintendent works closely with site management, supervisors, employees, clients, and regulatory agencies to reduce risk, prevent incidents, and promote continuous improvement in workplace health and safety performance.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Leadership & Safety Culture
- Champion a proactive safety culture across all operations.
- Provide leadership, mentorship, and guidance to site-based safety personnel.
- Promote employee engagement and participation in safety programs.
- Lead by example and reinforce company safety expectations.
- Collaborate with operational leadership to integrate safety into daily work activities.
Regulatory Compliance
- Ensure compliance with applicable provincial and federal occupational health and safety legislation.
- Maintain compliance with client-specific safety requirements and site standards.
- Monitor legislative changes and implement necessary program updates.
- Support regulatory inspections, audits, and follow-up actions.
Safety Programs & Systems
- Develop, implement, and maintain health and safety programs, procedures, and standards.
- Oversee hazard identification, risk assessment, and corrective action processes.
- Manage safety management systems, records, and documentation.
- Review and update Safe Work Procedures, Safe Job Procedures, and Safe Operating Procedures.
Incident Management
- Lead incident investigations, root cause analysis, and corrective action development.
- Track and monitor incident trends, high-potential events, and performance metrics.
- Ensure timely reporting and documentation of incidents and near misses.
- Develop strategies to reduce recordable injuries and high-risk events.
Auditing & Inspections
- Conduct regular site inspections, audits, and safety assessments.
- Verify compliance with company policies, client standards, and regulatory requirements.
- Provide practical recommendations to improve workplace safety performance.
- Monitor corrective actions to ensure completion and effectiveness.
Training & Development
- Oversee safety orientation, onboarding, and competency programs.
- Support training initiatives related to hazard awareness, supervisor development, and regulatory requirements.
- Knowledge of Ontario Common Core is required
- Ensure employees maintain required certifications and qualifications.
- Mentor supervisors and managers on safety leadership practices.
Client & Stakeholder Relations
- Act as a primary safety representative with clients and external stakeholders.
- Participate in client safety meetings, project reviews, and operational planning.
- Build strong working relationships with site personnel and client representatives.
- Support business development opportunities by demonstrating commitment to safety excellence.
Reporting & Performance Monitoring
- Prepare and present safety reports to senior management.
- Monitor key performance indicators and leading/lagging safety metrics.
- Analyze trends and recommend continuous improvement initiatives.
- Support annual safety objectives and strategic planning activities.
QUALIFICATIONS
Required
- Diploma or degree in Occupational Health and Safety, Environmental Health, Mining, or a related field.
- Minimum 7-10 years of health and safety experience in mining, heavy civil construction, or industrial environments.
- Minimum 3 years of leadership experience managing safety personnel and programs.
- Strong knowledge of provincial Occupational Health and Safety legislation and mining regulations.
- Experience conducting incident investigations and root cause analysis.
- Valid driver's license with the ability to travel to remote project locations.
Preferred
- Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP) designation.
- National Construction Safety Officer (NCSO) designation.
- Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety (COHS).
- COR Auditor Certification.
- Mining industry experience in underground operations.
