Position Overview
We are hiring an experienced Lead Hand to own setups and quality in our cutting area. This is a hands-on role: you will set up and dial in our cut-to-length and recut equipment, verify first pieces, troubleshoot dimensional and mechanical issues, and keep our cutting operators running smoothly day to day. You will be the first point of escalation for the cutting team and report to our operations lead. Ideal for someone with deep cutting experience who wants to stay on the tools while taking ownership of an area.
Essential Duties
- Perform setups and changeovers on cut-to-length and recut equipment to production specifications
- Dial in and troubleshoot machines to hold tolerance, end quality, and minimize scrap
- Verify first-piece and in-process quality checks (length, squareness, burr, dimensional accuracy) using precision measuring tools
- Operate equipment as needed and step in to keep the line moving
- Coordinate and support cutting operators day to day and train newer operators on setups and quality checks
- Monitor output and material flow and communicate issues to the operations lead
- Enforce OHSA and company safety standards, including PPE, machine guarding, and lockout/tagout procedures
- Maintain production records and keep the cutting area clean, organized, and safe
- Other duties as assigned
Must Haves
- High school diploma or equivalent
- 4–6 years of experience setting up and operating cutting equipment in a manufacturing environment
- Ability to perform setups, changeovers, and troubleshooting independently
- Experience guiding, training, or coordinating other operators
- Ability to read blueprints and use micrometers/calipers
- Strong mechanical aptitude and attention to detail
- Reliable, punctual, safety-focused, and a strong communicator
Nice to Haves
- Experience with tube cut-to-length or recut equipment (Haven, Hautau, RSA, or similar) — strong asset
- Previous experience in steel or tube manufacturing — strongly preferred
- Forklift or overhead crane certification
Physical Requirements
- Ability to stand and walk for extended periods
- Must be able to lift, push, and pull up to 50 lbs
- Comfortable working in a loud, industrial environment with moving machinery
