Full job description

The primary purpose of the Land and Resource Manager is to provide professional assistance and support to AWN Executive Director and positions supervised in problem solving; project planning and management; and development and execution of AWN goals and objectives.

The Land and Resource Manager is responsible for successful implementation of the consultation process, project planning and management, and establishing and maintaining sound working relationships and partnerships with industry and the government to improve the social and economic well-being of Nation members.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

Consultation:

Serve as a primary contact for AWN with outside proponents to advance Land and Resource processes, policies and agreements, ensuring efficient and effective communication.
Ensure that AWN actively participates in industry and government led initiatives that will influence policy, regulatory changes or landscape level impacts
Work in cooperation with Executive Manager to negotiate, implement, monitor and measure items in cooperation agreements, MOUs and letters of agreement.
Review Land and Resource-related reports, policies, notices and concerns received by AWN or identified by department staff, and report significant findings and concerns to the Executive Director.
Oversee industry site visits and traditional use studies and review collected information to ensure accuracy and that data is gathered in a culturally sensitive and effective manner.
Interpret and provide information to the AWN Board on emerging government policies regarding consultation, land and resource matters.
Serve as Team Lead for special projects related to consultation as required from time to time.
Act as AWN representative on committees, task forces, or boards formed to deal with consultation issues as appointed by the AWN Board or Executive Director.
Oversee the Traditional Land Use database and related hard-copy information, ensuring that Traditional Land Use information and collected site data are maintained accurately and securely.

Project Planning and Management:

Oversee the planning, implementation and evaluation of projects related to consultation, land and resources, ensuring alignment with AWN’s mission and the priorities of the Board.
Oversee Land and Resource Department activities undertaken through AWN, including monitoring activities, equipment, budgets, spending and reporting.
Develop strategic plans to advocate for AWN’s Section 35 Rights to practice their culture and access the land for traditional activities.
Oversee the planning, implementation, execution and evaluation of special projects and initiatives assigned by the Executive Director.
Apply for, maintain and oversee grants and permits related to Land and Resource programs, ensuring requirements are met and required data is collected accurately and efficiently.

Economic Development:

Work with AWN companies’ senior managers to form strategic partnerships and negotiate, implement and maintain MOUs, cooperation agreements and letters of agreement related to economic development opportunities.
Seek out opportunities for companies within current AWN initiatives that meet the goals and objectives of companies, and help to build company capacity
Assist with coordinated program delivery between organizations, such as training opportunities and workforce development initiatives

General:

In partnership with other AWN staff, organize and implement the AWN Wilderness Camps, AWN special events, and AWN’s participation in industry or government events such as trade fairs, workshops, career fairs, open houses, or tours.
Accompany Executive Director and/or President to meetings, and assist with scheduling and travel arrangements
Oversee administrative functions for the Land and Resource Department, including budgeting, planning, reporting and invoicing; follow up with companies regarding outstanding balances and consultation requirements; document recurring outstanding balances and address non-compliance with consultation procedures; and maintain accurate records and an activity calendar.
Assist the Executive Director with governance-related administrative tasks, including drafting correspondence, compiling research, committee oversight, records management and reporting.
Oversee regulatory compliance (i.e. environment and forest management rules and regulations).
Champion health and safety through role modeling and holding employees, contractors, visitors and other members of the Leadership Team accountable to all safety expectations and standards in a positive and constructive manner.
Lead and manage human resources initiatives and activities for direct reports including recruitment, on-boarding, performance management, employee development, training and general support.
Collaborate with the leadership team on corporate business plans and strategies ensuring consistency with organizational goals.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Post-secondary business, science or arts degree or diploma or equivalent experience & education combined.
Pervious management experience is preferred.
Intermediate level PC skills as well as general computer email, internet knowledge.
Experience working in an Indigenous organization or community is an asset.
