Full job description

Nelson Lumber is looking for a motivated and customer-focused Customer Service Labourer to join our retail yard team. This role is ideal for someone who enjoys working outdoors, providing excellent customer service, and contributing to a fast-paced team environment.

As a member of our yard operations team, you will assist customers with building material orders, safely operate equipment, maintain an organized and efficient yard, and help ensure a safe and productive workplace.

Key Responsibilities

Provide exceptional customer service by assisting customers courteously and professionally.
Accurately pick, process, and prepare customer orders.
Load and unload building materials safely and efficiently.
Operate forklifts, loaders, and hand tools after receiving appropriate training.
Identify and handle a variety of lumber and building material products.
Measure and sort materials according to customer specifications.
Maintain a clean, organized, and safe yard, warehouse, and equipment.
Perform general yard maintenance and outdoor upkeep.
Follow all company safety policies and procedures and report hazards or unsafe conditions.
Communicate effectively with customers and team members.
Complete other duties as assigned to support yard operations.

Qualifications

Strong customer service and communication skills.
Knowledge of lumber and building materials is preferred.
Knowledge of general workplace safety practices.
Ability to follow both verbal and written instructions.
Self-motivated with a strong work ethic, attention to detail, and a commitment to teamwork.
Physically fit and capable of lifting up to 75 lbs on a regular basis.
Comfortable working outdoors in all weather conditions.
Ability to work a regular schedule of 5 days per week, 8-hour shifts, with overtime as required.

Preferred Qualifications

The following are considered assets:

Forklift certification or experience operating material handling equipment.
Experience operating loaders.
Ability to accurately use a tape measure.
Class 3 Driver's Licence and/or Air Brake (Q) Endorsement.
Previous experience in a lumber yard, warehouse, construction supply, or related industry.

Training

No formal education is required. Nelson Lumber provides on-the-job training for equipment operation and company procedures.
