Reporting to senior leadership, the Controller will lead the organization’s accounting and financial operations with a strong emphasis on cost accounting, inventory analysis, and operational finance. This individual will partner closely with production, operations, and leadership teams to provide meaningful financial insights that support profitability, operational efficiency, and long-term strategic growth. The successful candidate will thrive in a fast-paced manufacturing and processing environment and bring a hands-on, analytical, and continuous improvement mindset.
What you’ll be doing
- Leading the day-to-day accounting and financial reporting functions across the organization.
- Overseeing month-end and year-end close processes, including reconciliations, journal entries, and financial statement preparation.
- Managing and enhancing cost accounting processes related to seafood processing and production operations.
- Monitoring inventory valuation, labour costing, yield analysis, overhead allocation, and manufacturing variances.
- Providing detailed cost analysis and operational reporting to support production and business decision-making.
- Partnering closely with operations teams to identify opportunities for margin improvement, process optimization, and cost control.
- Supporting budgeting, forecasting, and financial planning activities across multiple facilities and operational groups.
- Analyzing inventory trends, production efficiencies, and operational KPIs to provide actionable insights.
- Assisting with cash flow management, financial controls, and process improvement initiatives.
- Coordinating external audit activities and supporting year-end audit requirements.
- Supporting ERP optimization, automation initiatives, and enhanced reporting capabilities.
- Leading and mentoring members of the finance and accounting team while fostering a collaborative and accountable culture.
What we are looking for
- CPA designation preferred (appropriate experience considered).
- Progressive accounting and finance experience within manufacturing, food processing, seafood, or other production-focused industries.
- Strong experience in cost accounting, inventory management, and operational finance.
- Experience supporting complex production or processing environments with high-volume inventory and multiple product streams.
- Strong understanding of financial reporting, internal controls, budgeting, forecasting, and variance analysis.
- Experience working with ERP systems and advanced Microsoft Excel capabilities. Specific experience with Sage 300, SQL, and PowerBI is an asset.
- Proven ability to translate financial information into operational insights and recommendations.
- Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
- Hands-on leadership style with the ability to build strong relationships across operational and finance teams.
- Continuous improvement mindset with a passion for improving systems, reporting, and operational efficiency.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Bilingualism is an asset.
