The Corporate Bolter Trainer is responsible for developing, delivering, and evaluating training programs for Bolter Operators across multiple underground mining projects. This role ensures operators achieve and maintain competency in safe, efficient, and productive rock bolting practices while supporting company standards, regulatory compliance, and continuous improvement initiatives.
The Corporate Bolter Trainer provides hands-on field coaching, classroom instruction, competency assessments, and mentorship to operators of varying skill levels. The position works closely with site management, supervisors, and health and safety teams to improve operational performance, ground support quality, and overall workforce capability across all company operations.
This is a remote position that will require travel to site on a regular basis.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Training & Development
- Develop and deliver standardized bolter operator training programs aligned with company standards and site-specific requirements.
• Conduct classroom, practical, and field-based instruction covering all aspects of mechanized bolting operations.
- Train new hires and existing employees on bolter equipment, systems, and operating procedures — including split sets, resin bolts, cable bolts, friction bolts, and mesh installation.
• Provide coaching and mentorship to operators to improve performance, productivity, and ground support quality.
• Develop training materials, presentations, assessments, and competency evaluation tools.
- Facilitate new employee orientation, onboarding, and refresher training programs.
Competency Assessment
- Evaluate operator competency through structured practical demonstrations and field observations.
- Conduct formal operator assessments and maintain accurate, up-to-date training records.
- Identify individual skill gaps and create targeted development plans for operators at all experience levels.
- Assess operators against company standards, ground support specifications, and site-specific requirements.
- Support initial certification, periodic recertification, and cross-training processes.
Ground Support & Operational Support
- Work with site supervision to improve bolting practices, ground support quality, and operational efficiency.
- Promote best practices in pattern bolting, bolt installation quality, torque requirements, resin mixing, and mesh handling.
- Assist with the implementation of new equipment, ground support technologies, and updated operating procedures.
- Participate in incident investigations involving bolting operations and provide corrective training recommendations.
- Analyze bolting performance metrics and key indicators; provide data-driven recommendations for continuous improvement.
Safety & Compliance
- Promote a strong safety culture at all times and lead by example in all field activities.
- Ensure compliance with company policies, site-specific ground control plans, stope design requirements, mine regulations, and applicable provincial or federal legislation.
- Deliver training on hazard identification, risk assessment, job hazard analysis, and safe work procedures specific to bolting operations.
- Conduct field inspections and safety audits focused on bolting operations and ground support installation.
- Support site safety initiatives, ground control management programs, and continuous improvement activities.
Administration
- Maintain accurate, current training records and competency documentation in company systems.
- Prepare regular reports on training activities, operator competency status, and workforce development progress.
- Track operator qualifications, certifications, and training compliance requirements across multiple sites.
- Collaborate with Human Resources and site management on workforce development plans and succession planning.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education
- High School Diploma or equivalent required.
- Mining-related trade certification or post-secondary education is considered an asset.
- Adult education, training design, or instructional certification is considered an asset.
Experience
- Minimum 8–10 years of underground mining experience required.
- Minimum 5 years of hands-on experience operating mechanized bolters in an underground hard rock or coal mining environment.
- Previous experience as a Trainer, Lead Hand, Supervisor, or Mentor is strongly preferred.
- Experience with various bolter manufacturers including Epiroc, Sandvik, JH Fletcher, MacLean, or equivalent.
- Strong understanding of underground ground support systems, installation methods, and ground control management plans.
Certifications & Licences
- Valid driver's licence required.
- Relevant underground mining certifications required (jurisdiction-specific).
- Ground Control certification or equivalent is a strong asset.
- Train-the-Trainer (T3) certification preferred.
- Standard First Aid / CPR certification considered an asset.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS
- Advanced knowledge of rock bolting methods and ground support systems, including mechanical bolts, resin bolts, cable bolts, friction bolts, mesh installation, and shotcrete interaction.
- Strong understanding of underground mining best practices, ground control principles, and ground control management plans.
- Thorough knowledge of applicable mining health and safety legislation and regulatory requirements.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including public speaking and presentation delivery.
- Demonstrated ability to coach, mentor, and motivate employees of varying skill and experience levels.
- Strong problem-solving, analytical, and leadership skills.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) and training management or documentation systems.
- Ability to conduct performance evaluations and deliver clear, constructive, and actionable feedback.
- Strong organizational skills with high attention to detail in record-keeping and reporting.
