Chief of Staff / Future Senior Leader
Head Office – Fredericton, New Brunswick
Full‑time | In‑office | Long‑term leadership role
Who We Are
Scholten’s is a New Brunswick–based convenience retail company with nine locations and approximately 200 team members. We are a growth‑stage business built on long‑tenured people, strong values, and the belief that sustainable businesses are created by leaders who earn trust, take ownership, and think long term.
As we look ahead, our senior leaders are intentionally transitioning toward strategy, capital stewardship, and advisory roles. This hire represents a deliberate investment in the next generation of leadership at Scholten’s.
We are not building layers.
We are building capability, continuity, and culture.
If you care about how decisions are made, how teams are led, and how businesses endure over decades—not just quarters—this role will resonate.
The Opportunity
We are hiring a Chief of Staff / Future Senior Leader to work directly alongside our senior management team.
This role is designed for someone who can contribute at a meaningful leadership level immediately, while continuing to grow in scope and responsibility over time. You will not be a passive observer or a coordinator of tasks. You will be a trusted thought partner and operator, given real ownership early.
While this is a long‑term leadership role, it is not an entry‑level position. The right candidate will be comfortable operating independently, exercising sound judgment in uncertain situations, and bringing structure and clarity where it does not yet exist.
We are not hiring for polish.
We are hiring for judgment, humility, and alignment.
Job Description (What You’ll Do)
From the outset, you will work closely with the senior leadership team to support and improve how the business operates day to day.
Early responsibilities include:
- Contributing to operational decision‑making across multiple locations
- Supporting pricing, scheduling, site performance, and market monitoring
- Identifying gaps in systems and processes and helping design better ones
- Analyzing information and framing options—not just reporting data
- Coordinating initiatives that cut across locations, functions, and people
- Communicating clearly and respectfully with managers and frontline leaders
Over time, the role expands to include:
- Ownership of defined operational and strategic areas
- Leading initiatives in food service, site‑level performance, and process improvement
- Managing and developing leaders beneath you
- Acting as a de‑facto operator as senior leadership continues to shift toward more advisory roles
Experience & Background
- Demonstrated experience operating at a leadership level, not just executing tasks
- Formal leadership titles are not required; what matters most is demonstrated judgment, ownership, and how you show up for your team
- A track record of taking ownership of complex or ambiguous work
- Comfort making decisions with incomplete information and real consequences
- Experience working inside an operating business (not purely academic or advisory)
- Ability to work closely with senior leaders as a thought partner
- Willingness to live and work full‑time in Fredericton, New Brunswick
- A university degree in business, finance, operations, or a related field is an asset, but not a requirement
We care far more about how you think and how you act than about credentials alone.
How You Think (This Matters Most)
You are someone who:
- Is a team player first, understanding that strong businesses are built through trust and collaboration
- Earns respect through consistency, competence, and character—not ego
- Can contribute at a leadership level immediately, while remaining humble and open to learning
- Thinks clearly and stays structured when situations are messy or undefined
- Takes ownership and accountability without deflecting responsibility
- Communicates plainly, honestly, and respectfully
- Is coachable, curious, and willing to challenge ideas constructively
- Is motivated by building something lasting, not chasing titles or short‑term wins
Cultural alignment is non‑negotiable. Talent without humility does not scale here.
Compensation
This role requires an individual who can contribute at a meaningful leadership level from the outset, while continuing to grow in scope and responsibility over time.
Expected starting salary range:
$85,000 – $110,000 CAD, depending on experience, judgment, and scope of responsibility at entry.
This role can accommodate different entry points. Candidates who are ready to assume broader ownership and operate independently from day one may enter at the higher end of the range.
As responsibility, impact, and leadership scope grow, compensation is expected to scale accordingly. This is a long‑term leadership role, and we are committed to aligning pay with contribution over time.
Our priority is finding the right person—aligned with our culture, values, and long‑term vision—and structuring compensation fairly to reflect both immediate capability and continued growth.
