Position description

Reporting to the Head of Access Services and Interlibrary Loan, and working within a team environment, the Access Services Assistants carry out the day to day operations of the Access Services Department by maintaining the library circulation database, assisting students, faculty, staff and the public who are using the library’s resources and facilities, supporting the work of Librarians and the Interlibrary Loans & Coordinator, and creating and overseeing course reserves. Staff also maintain order and ensure the security of patrons, collections, and the building. These responsibilities are performed in shifts during days, evenings, weekends, statutory holidays, and extended hours during the exam period. This position will primarily involve evening shifts.

Position Responsibilities

Manages the day-to-day circulation and assists with the stewardship of library material.
Provides a wide array of patron services using the Integrated Library System.
Operates the Library’s course reserve services, with responsibilities including receiving and processing course reserves, liaising with faculty about course reserves, and being aware of Canadian copyright as it relates to materials on reserve in libraries.
Provides technical support to patrons using the library’s electronic tools such as printers and online patron accounts, and provides care and control of the Library’s audio-visual equipment and mobile devices.
Provides clerical assistance to librarians and archivists.
Oversees and updates Mount Allison patron database, which includes protecting confidential personal information.
Protects patron privacy in all transactions with patrons.
Performs technical duties related to catalogue records of library materials.
Assists in the training and supervision of student assistants.
Handles financial transactions.
Oversees the Library’s emergency and first-aid equipment and services.
Other duties as assigned.
All Access Services Department and Interlibrary Loan team members assist other team members when the need arises. This cross-functional team approach requires extra skills be acquired and utilized when necessary to ensure ongoing provision of service to the university community.

Qualifications/skills

This position requires a University degree or a Library Technician’s Diploma, or relevant combination of course work and experience, and a minimum of one year’s work experience in a library, preferably in an academic environment.
Strong technical skills and experience with an Integrated Library System are essential.
The successful candidate will have knowledge of library services, familiarity with library resources, and skills in using word processing and spreadsheet software (e.g. MS Word and Excel).
Experience with the digitization of materials would be considered an asset.
This position requires a focus on excellent patron service.
Strong interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to build and maintain good working relationships in close-knit environment are vital.
Physical stamina for lifting, moving and bending are required.
The incumbent must have good problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and the ability to prioritize and switch between multiple tasks.
Must be available to work in rotation some evenings and weekends.
