ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY
True North Log & Timber Homes Inc. is seeking a Senior Designer to join our design team. This is a hands-on, in-person role for a seasoned professional who brings deep technical expertise in residential construction, a thorough command of the Ontario Building Code, and a genuine passion for the craft of log and timber home design.
You will be responsible for producing the full spectrum of design deliverables — from permit-ready working drawings to immersive client presentations — while working in close collaboration with sales, estimating, project management, and structural engineering.

WHAT YOU WILL DO
- Produce permit-ready working drawings in full compliance with the 2024 Ontario Building Code, applicable regulatory statutes, and local planning ordinances
- Develop comprehensive design packages from initial schematics through to detailed construction drawings, covering floor plans, structural layouts, shell packages, foundation requirements, and truss specifications
- Generate detailed timber frame and log construction drawings, including assembly specifications and cut drawings for factory production
- Prepare detailed plans for pricing team review, ensuring the level of accuracy required for precise cost estimation throughout the project lifecycle
- Design overlay drawings for subcontractors — electrical, plumbing, and HVAC — to facilitate structured service coordination
- Develop working drawings for structural engineering review, including connection details that optimize structural integrity
- Create high-quality 3D renderings, cinematic product presentations, and immersive virtual reality environments for client walkthroughs, trade shows, and website integration
- Manage design revision cycles, maintain organized drawing packages, and compile detailed logs of all design modifications for pricing and project management
- Collaborate actively with sales, project managers, and clients to clarify project scopes, resolve design constraints, and communicate structural changes
- Participate in Version 1 drawing set review meetings and contribute to interdepartmental design revision sessions
- Maintain and update internal resource documents, including the building code and designer handbook, to reflect current standards
- Research emerging industry trends in building systems, interior design, and software; attend relevant conferences and training as required
QUALIFICATIONS
- College Diploma in Architectural Technology or equivalent credential
- 10 or more years of progressive experience in construction design and technical drafting
- Active BCIN — General Legal/Process, House, and Small Buildings (2024 OBC) — this is a firm requirement
- M.A.A.T.O. membership (AATO) is the preferred professional designation; C.E.T. (OACETT) is a recognized alternative or complement
- Proficiency in SoftPlan is required; experience with AutoCAD, SketchUp, Lumion, Photoshop, or comparable software is an asset
- Demonstrated experience producing permit-ready drawing sets under the Ontario Building Code for Part 9 residential and Part 3 small buildings
- Strong working knowledge of residential structural systems, log and timber construction methods, and foundational requirements
- Ancillary BCIN qualifications in HVAC, plumbing, on-site sewage, or detection and lighting are a strong asset
- Experience with virtual reality content creation for client-facing presentations
- Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite, Bluebeam, and Adobe applications
- Exceptional attention to detail, strong organizational discipline, and the ability to manage multiple concurrent projects under deadline
- Effective communicator who can translate complex design concepts clearly to clients, sales staff, and trades
