Position Summary:

The Canadian Mental Health Association, Simcoe County Branch seeks a Peer Support/Harm Reduction Specialists, who, in accordance with the agency’s policies, standards, and guidelines, is responsible for providing individualized support to participants/clients to help empower and integrate them into the community. They provide support in areas related to: emotional and social support, resource navigation, practical support services, and recovery-oriented practices. They will also be responsible for actively supporting and implementing the provision of services in accordance with The Guidelines for the Practice and Training of Peer Support. The Peer Support Specialist will also support the Drug Treatment Court (DTC) clients and attend bi-weekly DTC committee meetings one day per week along with the development of a group setting for our Emotions Management Program for Justice related clients.

What You'll Do:

Support people seeking service by providing non-clinical assistance including information, internal/external referral pathways and system navigation.
Provide information about agency programs and services and other community resources to individuals, and with their permission, to family and significant others.
Provide direct service (virtually and in person) to clients (both individually and in groups) as per agency guidelines, policies, and procedures including: skills teaching on activities and behaviours of daily living, assistance in obtaining and maintaining housing, encouragement/supportive counselling, feedback to enable participants to reach their goals, crisis intervention strategies/support, relapse prevention strategies, self-care strategies/support, and family support/education as appropriate to support the interests of the participant/client.
Work in collaboration with the Addiction Outreach Community Support Worker in providing walking outreach support, system navigation, harm reduction distribution, and program promotion within the community.
Develop, implement, and document treatment plans in conjunction with the client and other CMHA program team members.
Support client intake/referral process as required (identify client needs/abilities through information obtained from the client, their natural supports, and the referral source).
Provide on-duty brief services to individuals who “walk-in” to office.
Communicate program recommendations to the Program Manager.
Provide information and strategies for health promotion and prevention.
Empower participants/clients to identify, build, and maintain a natural support system.
Responsible for transporting clients, on occasion.
Work collaboratively and in partnership with ethno-racial communities and organizations to facilitate the development of appropriate services for the members of these communities.
Facilitate connections to needed/wanted services, supports, and resources, including those in the broader community.

Required Qualifications:

Minimum 2-3 years combined education and experience in the human services field.
Must have one of the following: Human Service Worker; Social Service Worker; Addictions Diploma or; A University degree in a human services related field, preferably Social Work.
Personal lived experience with mental health and/or addiction recovery.
Recipient of addiction or mental health services would be an asset.
Peer support related training and/or knowledge of The Guidelines for the Practice and Training of Peer Support.
Must have access to a vehicle, a valid Ontario driver’s license, and adequate automobile insurance.
Submission of a Vulnerable Sector Check (VSC), including a Criminal Record Check (CRC) in good standing.
Fluency in French or another second language would be an asset.
Legally entitled to work in Canada.

Salary Scale:

Peer Support Harm Reduction Specialist $27.15 - $30.30 per hour

HOURS OF WORK:

Thirty-five (35) hours per week, Monday to Friday
Able to work within a flexible framework to respond to client needs.
