As part of the public education system in Nova Scotia, the Strait Regional Centre for Education (SRCE) was established on April 1, 2018, to deliver the public school program focusing on supporting student learning, achievement, well-being and overall success. The Strait Regional Centre for Education, with the support of approximately 1,166 employees, works diligently to achieve its mission “to empower our children and youth, within safe, equitable and inclusive environments to embrace a changing world as responsible, contributing and successful lifelong learners.” In 2025-2026, the SRCE operates 20 schools with approximately 5,948 students; and approximately 375 children are attending pre-primary programs at 14 school locations. Located in the northeastern part of Nova Scotia, the Strait Regional Centre for Education’s jurisdiction encompasses the counties of Antigonish, Guysborough, Inverness and Richmond, an area of approximately 11,000 square kilometres with a population of 53,742 (Census 2021).

Casual Janitor, All Locations
Responsibilities:
Clean, on a daily or as scheduled basis, all assigned areas of the school in accordance with established practices and standards;
Obtain and maintain sufficient supplies on hand to carry out duties and responsibilities;
Report any breakdowns, accidents, damage or vandalism to the appropriate supervisor;
Secure all doors and windows whenever the building is vacated and activate security system if last person to vacate building;
Perform floor care duties, such as stripping, sealing, waxing, burnishing, etc.;
Perform duties in compliance with school, Operations Department, and Regional Education Office policies and procedures including occupational health, safety, work routines, WHMIS, and evacuation plans and the laws of the Province of Nova Scotia ;
Other related duties as assigned.
Essential Qualifications:
- Good physical health to perform janitorial and cleaner duties, and the ability to lift heavy equipment (up to 50 lbs)
- First Aid and WHMIS certification or willingness to obtain;
- Effective interpersonal and organizational skills;
- Ability to communicate effectively in both the written and oral form;
- Willingness to work as part of the school support team;
- Successful completion of Regional Centre for Education Sponsored Training Program for cleaner classification or willingness to participate in program.
Desirable Qualifications:
- Knowledge of commercial cleaning methods and procedures, general repair and groundskeeping
