The Law Society of BC is seeking a permanent, full-time, Paralegal, Records Handling & Investigation in our Investigation, Monitoring & Enforcement department. This position supports the effective investigation and discipline of licensees. The paralegal works closely with lawyers and staff in the Investigations, Monitoring & Enforcement (“IME”) and Discipline departments. This role exercises considerable judgment in accomplishing work and reports to the Manager, IME.
The duties of the position include:
- Responsible for evidence continuity within IME, including classification, retention and disposition policies and procedures;
- Providing guidance to IME staff to ensure that the policies and procedures for saving digital evidence to case management software are followed;
- Reviewing, analyzing and coding investigation records to assist in identifying key documents, relevant issues and producing reports, chronologies and summaries;
- Assist with maintenance and disposition of physical and digital evidence;
- Assisting in gathering evidence for investigations including conducting online searches (e.g., BC OnLine, court registries, corporate records, BC LTSA, internet searches);
- Conducting legal research and preparing memos, including assisting drafting legal opinions and undertakings;
- Conducting interviews of witnesses and assisting staff lawyers with interviews of subject lawyers and witnesses;
- Assisting with engaging medical experts and monitoring the progress of medical monitoring agreements;
- Independently handling investigation files involving conduct issues, including breaches of the client identification and verification rules, cash transaction rules and juricert breaches, and preparing and presenting opinions to the Discipline Committee on these matters;
- Creating and maintaining various knowledge management tools, including spreadsheets and databases and assisting with the preparation of statistics;
- Preparing professional conduct record histories; and
- Other duties that the Manager or Director of IME may assign.
Qualifications
- A paralegal degree (or equivalent) supplemented by at least 5 years of relevant experience in an investigative or litigation environment.
- Meticulous attention to detail and an understanding of “chain of evidence / custody” requirements is required.
- Proficiency with computer software including: Microsoft Office Suite, including Excel, Adobe, case and document management programs (i.e., iPro or Reveal), and database and knowledge management systems.
- Ability to apply advanced legal research, writing and analytical skills with accuracy and professionalism.
- Strong interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to build collaborative partnerships.
- Ability to exercise discretion, maintain confidentiality, and work both independently and collaboratively with cross-functional teams.
- Demonstrated ability to handle and effectively prioritize a high volume of work in a trauma-informed matter.
The terms and conditions of the collective agreement between the Law Society of BC and the Professional Employees Association apply to this position.
The salary range for this position is $83,089.66 to $101,464.46.
