The Opportunity
Venture Tax Services is looking for an experienced Tax & Bookkeeping Associate who is equally comfortable preparing a T1, cleaning up a set of books, and communicating with a client to get the information needed to move a file forward.
This is a year-round, full-time hybrid position with a strong focus on personal tax preparation, supported by recurring bookkeeping, T2 preparation support and client service.
We're looking for someone who already has hands-on experience with Canadian T1 preparation and bookkeeping and can step into a busy accounting environment with confidence.
What the Role Looks Like
60% – Tax Preparation & T2 Support
25% – Bookkeeping
15% – Client & Administrative Support
The exact mix will shift throughout the year. Tax takes the lead during filing season, while bookkeeping, file preparation and client support become a larger focus outside peak periods.
What You'll Do
Tax Preparation – Approximately 60%
- Prepare Canadian T1 personal income tax returns
- Prepare returns for individuals, sole proprietors and clients with rental properties
- Support the preparation of T2 corporate income tax returns and related schedules for owner-managed businesses
- Review client documents and identify missing or inconsistent information
- Follow up to keep files moving and deadlines on track
- Maintain clear file notes, workpapers and supporting documentation
- Recognize when a tax matter requires additional review or escalation
Bookkeeping – Approximately 25%
- Complete recurring bookkeeping for a portfolio of small-business clients using QuickBooks Online
- Categorize transactions and reconcile bank and credit-card accounts
- Review general-ledger activity and investigate discrepancies
- Prepare clean, organized files for GST filings, payroll and year-end tax preparation
- Follow up with clients regarding missing records and unusual transactions
Client & Administrative Support – Approximately 15%
- Communicate with clients by phone, email and through our client portal
- Assist with document collection and missing-information requests
- Provide routine file and status updates
- Maintain client notes, task dashboards and workflow systems
- Support front-line client service during in-office days
- Help keep client files, correspondence and documentation organized
What We're Looking For
Hands-on Canadian T1 preparation experience is required.
You'll also bring:
- Practical bookkeeping experience, including bank and credit-card reconciliations and general-ledger review
- Working knowledge of Canadian personal tax concepts
- Experience with sole-proprietor and rental-property reporting
- Experience using QuickBooks Online
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to accuracy
- Excellent organization and follow-through
- Ability to manage multiple files and competing deadlines
- Clear, professional written and verbal communication
- Ability to work independently while remaining accountable and connected to the team
- High standards of confidentiality and professionalism
Nice to Have
Experience with any of the following would be an asset:
- T2 corporate tax preparation or preparation support
- Intuit ProTax
- Financial Cents or similar workflow-management software
- More complex sole-proprietor or rental-property returns
- GST preparation and filing
- Payroll-related bookkeeping
- Corporate year-end file preparation
Our Hybrid Schedule
This role follows a structured hybrid schedule:
Monday & Friday – Remote
Focused primarily on tax preparation, bookkeeping, processing, follow-up and completion work.
Tuesday–Thursday – In Office
Focused on collaboration, client communication, technical work and front-line client service.
Standard hours are generally 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., including a 30-minute unpaid lunch.
Tax season requires additional flexibility as we work together to meet critical filing deadlines. Our approach is to balance the heavier demands of tax season with greater flexibility during quieter periods.
