Fontaine Site Services is a growing civil construction contractor specializing in earthworks, excavation, underground utilities, and civil infrastructure.
We operate a growing fleet of excavators, loaders, compactors, generators, trucks, and other construction equipment. Much of our heavy-equipment fleet consists of Caterpillar excavators and loaders ranging from approximately 3 to 35 tonnes, so CAT experience is a strong asset.
The Position
We are looking for a mechanically capable and resourceful Field Maintenance Technician to help maintain our construction fleet.
This position is primarily focused on preventive maintenance and scheduled servicing rather than major mechanical repairs. Approximately 70% of the workload will consist of maintenance work, including fluid and filter changes, greasing, inspections, and scheduled services. The remaining 30% will involve light mechanical repairs, troubleshooting, and assisting our senior heavy-duty technicians when required.
This is primarily an independent field-service position, not a traditional shop mechanic role. Most work is completed from a service vehicle directly on active construction sites throughout Vancouver, the Lower Mainland, and the Sea-to-Sky Corridor.
The position is primarily focused on:
- Preventive maintenance and scheduled servicing
- Replacement of engine oil, hydraulic oil, coolant, differential oil, transmission fluids, and other required fluids
- Filter replacement
- Greasing and lubrication
- Equipment inspections
- Identifying worn, damaged, or leaking components before they develop into major repairs
- Light troubleshooting, diagnostics, and mechanical repairs
- Assisting our senior heavy-duty technicians with larger repairs when required
You may also be the first mechanical person responding when a piece of equipment goes down. You should be comfortable assessing the problem, performing basic troubleshooting, communicating with the Fleet Manager and site personnel, and determining whether the issue can be handled within your abilities, should be passed on to one of our senior technicians, or requires dealer or specialized mechanical support.
We do not expect you to know how to repair everything.
We are looking for someone with good mechanical judgment who can work independently, complete routine maintenance correctly, perform practical repairs within their abilities, and recognize when additional support is required.
Remote support from the Fleet Manager is available, but another mechanic will not normally be working beside you.
Responsibilities
- Complete oil changes, fluid changes, filter replacements, greasing, and lubrication.
- Perform routine equipment inspections and identify worn, damaged, or leaking components before they result in larger failures.
- Check fluid levels, hoses, belts, batteries, tires, tracks, undercarriage components, leaks, and other common wear items.
- Perform light mechanical repairs on excavators, loaders, compactors, generators, trucks, and other construction equipment.
- Respond to equipment breakdowns and perform basic onsite troubleshooting.
- Diagnose common starting, charging, electrical, mechanical, hydraulic, and operating issues within your level of experience.
- Assist senior heavy-duty technicians with larger repairs when required.
- Communicate equipment condition, repair priorities, deficiencies, and required parts to the Fleet Manager.
- Maintain accurate records of maintenance, repairs, inspections, and outstanding deficiencies.
- Keep the service van organized, stocked, and ready for scheduled maintenance and field repairs.
- Safely operate equipment when required for inspection, servicing, testing, and troubleshooting.
Requirements
- Minimum 2 years of hands-on mechanical or equipment maintenance experience.
- Strong mechanical aptitude and practical troubleshooting ability.
- Comfortable performing preventive maintenance and scheduled servicing independently.
- Able to work through basic mechanical problems without constant supervision.
- Heavy-equipment maintenance experience is a strong asset.
- Experience with automotive, commercial trucks, agricultural equipment, rental equipment, diesel equipment, or small engines will also be considered.
- Basic understanding of diesel engines, hydraulics, electrical systems, and equipment maintenance is an asset.
- Comfortable operating excavators and loaders for inspection and testing.
- Valid driver's licence.
- Comfortable driving and working from a field service van.
- Organized, dependable, proactive, and accountable.
- Good communication skills and a practical can-do attitude.
- Successful candidate must provide a driver's abstract.
- A criminal record check will be required, with the cost reimbursed after one month of employment.
Apprentices
We are open to experienced apprentices, particularly 3rd- or 4th-year apprentices who are already comfortable working independently.
This position is not well suited to someone who requires continuous hands-on supervision or expects to shadow a journeyman mechanic throughout the day.
We do not currently have a Red Seal mechanic providing full-time daily supervision, so apprenticeship candidates should confirm that the position works with their individual apprenticeship requirements.
Schedule
Monday to FridayApproximately 7:00 AM–3:00 PM
Overtime may be available when required for breakdowns, repairs, or operational needs.
What We Offer
- $30–$38/hour, based on experience, mechanical ability, maintenance experience, and level of independence.
- Company service vehicle for work use.
- Company-supplied service equipment and tools.
- Overtime opportunities.
- Extended health benefits.
- Annual performance-based bonus.
- Long-term, stable employment with a growing construction company.
- Exposure to a wide variety of construction equipment.
- Opportunity to develop into more advanced heavy-equipment diagnostics and repairs over time.
- Opportunity to eventually operate from a larger, fully equipped field service truck as the role develops.
- Access to equipment maintenance manuals, service information, and Caterpillar SIS to assist with maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair procedures.
Who We're Looking For
The ideal candidate is someone who takes pride in keeping equipment properly maintained and identifying problems before they turn into expensive breakdowns.
This is first and foremost a maintenance position. You do not need to be a fully qualified heavy-duty mechanic or know how to perform major engine, transmission, hydraulic pump, or component repairs.
You do need to be mechanically capable, dependable, organized, resourceful, and comfortable completing routine equipment maintenance independently.
You should also be willing to investigate basic mechanical problems, use the information and resources available to you, perform light repairs within your abilities, and communicate when additional technical support is required.
We want someone who is interested in learning and developing their skills. The Fleet Manager will provide remote support, assist with troubleshooting and repair planning, and provide access to service manuals, Caterpillar SIS, and other technical resources when needed.
If you enjoy working independently in the field, maintaining construction equipment, preventing breakdowns, and developing your mechanical skills, we'd like to hear from you.
We thank all applicants for their interest; however, only those selected for an interview will be contacted.
