We are seeking an experienced and hands-on Health & Safety Advisor to support our industrial quarry operation in Lower Cove, Newfoundland.
Under the direction of the Manager, Safety and Security, the Safety Advisor plays a key role in supporting and advancing a proactive safety culture at the Lower Cove site. Working closely with front line supervisors, employees, contractors, and management, the Safety Advisor identifies risks, develops mitigation strategies, conducts audits and inspections, facilitates incident investigations, and promotes continuous improvement in workplace safety performance.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

- Provide day-to-day coaching and support to supervisors, employees, and contractors on safe work practices.
- Support the development and implementation of safety initiatives, campaigns, and continuous improvement programs.
- Participate in safety meetings, toolbox talks, and site-wide safety communications.
- Coordinate with the JOHS Committee.
- Foster employee engagement and accountability in health and safety matters.
- Conduct workplace inspections and audits.
- Identify hazards and evaluate operational risks using established risk assessment methodologies.
- Assist departments in developing effective hazard controls and safe work procedures.
- Monitor corrective actions and verify closure of safety-related findings.
- Lead or participate in incident investigations, including injuries, near misses, property damage, and environmental events.
- Prepare comprehensive incident reports.
- Identify incident trends and provide recommendations for performance improvement.
- Ensure compliance with Newfoundland and Labrador Occupational Health and Safety legislation, Transport Canada Regulations, and company policies.
- Support site compliance inspections and regulatory audits.
- Maintain and track safety metrics and corrective actions using computer based safety software programs.
- Assist in developing and updating site policies, procedures, and standards.
- Deliver internal health and safety training programs for employees and contractors.
- Facilitate site orientations.
- Provide coaching on hazard identification, incident reporting, and safe work execution.
- Act as the facility MFSO designate as required which includes emergency response planning and drills.
- Assist in the maintenance and continuous improvement of site wide emergency response procedures, including working at height and in confined spaces
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE
- A certificate or diploma in Occupational Health and Safety or other relevant area of study from an accredited post-secondary institution.
- A minimum of 5 years’ experience in a safety role is required. Consideration may be given to applications with strong industry work experience.
- Previous experience in working in mining, construction, or heavy industry is preferred.
- Demonstrated competency with Microsoft Office Systems (Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook).
- The successful applicant must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license.
The following certifications would be considered an asset:
- NSCO or CRSP designation
- MFSO designation
- Training certification(s)

- A strong knowledge of provincial Occupational Health and Safety legislation
- Strong interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills, with ability to communicate with employees, management and contractors on matters related to safety.
- Strong time management skills with ability to meet deadlines while managing multiple projects simultaneously.
- The ability to work independently and lead safety initiatives on site.
- Demonstrated proficiency with Microsoft Office Systems (Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook).
WORKING CONDITIONS
- Operational environment which requires the ability to maintain a strong presence in the field, as well as in an office environment using computers, read, write and communicate clearly.
- The ability to work a schedule of 4 days on and 4 days off, with some work outside normal rotation and hours required.
- Hours of work are from 7am – 5pm. Some flexibility may be considered.
