Overview

Join a collaborative and student-centered team dedicated to supporting health and wellness on campus. As a Registered Nurse in our University Health and Wellness Clinic, you will play a key role in delivering accessible, high-quality primary care services to a diverse student population. Working as an integral member of a multidisciplinary team—including physicians, counsellors, and health promotion professionals—you will contribute to a holistic approach to care that supports students’ physical, mental, and emotional well-being. This position is situated within a supportive and positive Student Affairs environment that values collaboration, innovation, and a commitment to student success.

This position is for a 20 month contract.

Responsibilities

Comply with Nursing Code of Conduct, College Standards and Best Practices, and relevant legislation (e.g. PHIPA, RHPA, Nursing Act, Health Promotion and Protection Act)
Participate as part of an interdisciplinary team (physicians, counsellors, health promotors)
Assess student’s medical needs in order to inform provision of care
Conduct initial patient assessments and collect relevant clinical information, including vital signs, height, weight, and visual acuity, prior to physician consultation.
Perform and coordinate required point-of-care testing and specimen collection, such as pregnancy testing and sample collection for STI screening, to support patient assessment and treatment.
Utilize approved medical directives to assess patients and provide care within established protocols and scope of practice.
Provide clinical support to physicians during patient appointments, examinations, and procedures to ensure safe and efficient patient care.
Provide direct patient care and perform delegated clinical procedures within nursing scope of practice, such as immunizations, ear irrigation, and wound care), in accordance with professional standards and organizational policies.
Coordinate care with multiple service providers to ensure holistic approach.
Review and communicate laboratory results, and complete assigned clinical and administrative tasks in a timely manner.
Report positive tuberculosis (TB) and sexually transmitted infections (STI) test results to the Thunder Bay District Health Unit in accordance with the Health Promotion and Protection Act.
Ensure safe handling, storage, and use of liquid nitrogen in accordance with Occupational Health & Safety regulations and organizational policies.
Ensure compliance with Infection Prevention and Control Best Practice Guidelines.
Support quality assurance practices by monitoring clinical supplies and equipment, including expiry dates and safety equipment (e.g. eye wash station,) to ensure safe clinical operations.
Ensure compliance with the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care Vaccine Storage and Handling Protocols.
Manage inventory of medications including monitoring stock levels, ordering, and ensuring proper storage in accordance with organizational policies.
Deposit incoming pharmacy requests, laboratory results, and consultation notes into patient medical records to support physician review and sign off.
Initiate and coordinate patients’ third-party form process (e.g. fit for work, WSIB).
Facilitate follow up care as needed to support continuity of care.
Complete monthly reporting as required.
Perform general administrative duties as required.

Qualifications

Bachelor of Science in Nursing and good standing with College of Nurses of Ontario
1-3 years experience in a clinical nursing role
Strong therapeutic communication skills to provide sensitive, non-judgmental care to students
Understanding of the health needs of the post-secondary student population
Strong analytical and critical thinking skills
Experience with quality improvement in a healthcare environment
Experience working with a patient- centered model of care
Knowledge of relevant legislation (i.e. Regulated Health Professions Act, PHIPA, Health Promotion and Protection Act)
