Our data and modelling team combine deep technical and subject matter expertise across environmental, ecological, and geospatial disciplines. As the complexity of environmental and social challenges increases, we are expanding our capacity in data analytics and spatial modelling to support more rigorous assessments and evidence-based decision-making across our service offerings.
Position Overview
EcoLogic is seeking a talented data analyst to join our growing modelling team. The role will involve supporting projects with substantial data science components, with a focus on geospatial analysis of ecological and environmental data, including remote sensing products and predictive machine learning (ML) pipelines in R and Python.
Our project partners include Indigenous communities across British Columbia and Canada, industrial project proponents, and both governmental and non-governmental organizations. We offer competitive compensation and benefits packages.
Location
EcoLogic has offices in Burnaby, Lillooet and Prince George, and team members working remotely across British Columbia and Alberta. Preference will be given to candidates based in BC with relevant provincial experience; however, we welcome applications from all qualified individuals. Candidates with additional skill sets that complement the focal area or other aspects of environmental consulting are encouraged to highlight them in their application. Applicants must be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident of Canada.
Key Responsibilities and Requirements
Technical Duties
- Work with the data, modelling, and GIS teams to conduct geospatial analysis of project infrastructure, provincial disturbance datasets, and environmental / ecological data.
- Create and manage custom ML pipelines using remote sensing products to predict a variety of spatial outputs, including landcover types, disturbances, and species habitat.
- Assist with data management, processing, and analysis tasks to support a variety of multidisciplinary projects.
- Write and review technical reports and other writing tasks for project deliverables.
- Explain and present technical results and model outputs to non-technical audiences.
- Create summary tables and accessible figures displaying complex analysis and mapping results.
- Read and implement methods from academic research articles.
- Build and maintain code-based data processing and cloud infrastructure for analysis and storage, including Google Cloud / Google Earth Engine and SLURM high-performance computing clusters.
- Collaborate with the data team using Git/GitHub repositories.
Minimum Skills and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree or higher in Biological Sciences, Environmental Science, Data Science, or related fields.
- 5+ years of relevant industry experience (or 2+ years industry experience with relevant graduate degree).
- Proficiency with data/statistical analysis in R and/or Python.
- Familiarity with geospatial analysis and related tools (e.g., ArcGIS / QGIS, sf / geopandas, terra / rasterio).
- Research experience demonstrated through theses or technical reports.
Preferred Skills and Experience
- Professional registration with a relevant association (e.g., APEGA, ASPB, ACPA, AIA), or eligible to register within 12 months of hire date.
- Experience with processing remote sensing data with leading platforms like Google Earth Engine (preferred) or Microsoft Planetary Computer.
- Experience with ML in geospatial and/or environmental contexts at local and regional scales, including the use of cross-validation, model benchmarking/evaluation, parallelization, and feature engineering.
- Familiarity with cloud platforms such as Google Cloud (preferred) or AWS/Azure.
