MatchBox Consulting Group is recruiting for a Lead / Principal Substation Engineer to join a growing utility engineering practice supporting major infrastructure projects across British Columbia.
This role is ideal for an experienced substation engineer who enjoys remaining technically involved while providing leadership, mentorship, and strategic direction to multidisciplinary engineering teams. The successful candidate will serve as the technical lead for substation engineering, helping establish and grow the organization's substation practice while supporting some of Western Canada's largest utility infrastructure programs.

- Lead the planning, design, and delivery of electrical substation projects for utility and infrastructure clients
- Act as Professional of Record (PoR) and assume responsibility for engineering deliverables, technical quality, regulatory compliance, and professional accountability
- Prepare, review, approve, and seal engineering designs, calculations, drawings, specifications, and technical reports
- Provide technical leadership throughout planning, design, procurement, construction, commissioning, and project closeout phases
- Lead the development and review of substation layouts, equipment arrangements, bus configurations, grounding systems, and station physical design packages
- Coordinate engineering interfaces between station physical design, civil, structural, telecommunications, protection and control, transmission, and construction teams
- Lead multidisciplinary engineering teams and support successful project execution
- Mentor engineers, EITs, technologists, and technical leaders while supporting long-term team development
- Support project managers with scope, schedule, budget, risk management, constructability, and outage planning
- Participate in client engagement, proposals, technical presentations, interviews, and business development activities
- Support engineering standards, quality management systems, technical governance, and best practices
- Contribute to recruitment, succession planning, resource management, and practice growth initiatives
- Identify opportunities to improve project delivery, engineering quality, operational efficiency, and client satisfaction
- Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering
- Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) designation with EGBC or eligibility for registration in British Columbia
- Minimum 10 years of utility engineering experience, with preference for candidates possessing 15+ years
- Extensive experience delivering substation projects ranging from 4kV to 500kV
- Strong experience in substation physical design, including station layouts, equipment arrangements, grounding systems, and construction packages
- Demonstrated experience acting as Professional of Record (PoR) or Engineer of Record (EoR)
- Strong understanding of utility engineering design, construction, commissioning, outage coordination, and asset management principles
- Experience leading multidisciplinary engineering teams on complex infrastructure projects
- Strong communication, leadership, mentoring, and stakeholder management skills
- Proficiency with AutoCAD, Bluebeam, and Microsoft Office applications
- Direct utility experience with organizations such as BC Hydro, SaskPower, or other electric utilities
- Experience delivering projects for BC Hydro or supporting BC Hydro standards and design practices
- Experience leading greenfield and brownfield substation projects, upgrades, and expansions
- Strong background in station physical design, including:
- Substation layouts
- Arc flash considerations
- Circuit breaker applications
- Equipment arrangements
- Grounding systems
- Experience coordinating civil, structural, telecommunications, construction, and protection disciplines
- Experience with Bentley MicroStation, Bentley Substation, ProjectWise, or similar engineering platforms
- Experience supporting Indigenous engagement activities throughout project lifecycles
- Experience with engineering practice development, quality management, technical governance, recruitment, and organizational growth initiatives
