What is the best part of working at the company?
There are rare, beautiful moments of truly connecting with people and helping them in spiritually transformative ways.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
The overall culture of the denomination resists change, innovation, progress, critical thinking and analysis about its actual problems and finding a workable way forward within the quickly changing landscape of Canadian culture.  It is essentially self destructing by not planning for its future.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
As ministers you work largely in isolation, unless you are fortunate enough to be part of a large congregation that has a team ministry context.  A tremendous amount of responsibility and pressure is put on you to help your congregation survive, yet you are met with constant resistance when you try to innovate change and new programs to that purpose.  It is not a spiritually centred culture, despite being a religious organization -- primarily its about letting the status quo continue as a social system.   It is impossible to attract newcomers to a pre-existing social club for which there is no real central purpose except its own continuance. 

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
The baseline is working in an office to research, design and implement spiritually educational curriculum, write sermons, then attend meetings for Bible study, prayer groups, fundraising for outreach, committees and doing pastoral care visits to the sick or dying. It takes a tremendous amount of self-motivation and organization.

A typical day in Community Capacity Development usually involves research and resource, leadership, community and spiritual development. 

The development of training and workshop resources conducive to community growth and sustainability.

Focus is on being good stewards of the church, managing budgets, fundraising and funding opportunities for communities.

My work largely involves community engagement, deep listening and analytical problem solving and reporting.

What is the best part of working at the company?
Nothing. It's a horrible organization. The UCC does not stand behind or support their employees.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Trying to deal with the church board and Chinook Winds Region, who provide no training for new situations or support in difficult situations.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Toxic and traumatizing. There is no support or training for unusual, difficult situations or difficult people.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Frustrating, tense, traumatizing.

I enjoy working at The United Church of Canada.  I have freedom and trust and have a supportive environment in order to continue to streamline their office procedures.  I work alone most of the time which has it's advantages because I can concentrate and get lots of work done quickly but I have nobody to help when issues arise.  I enjoy working in my community in order to better my connections to those around me.

Arrive with a smile on your face because you are sure to leave in tears. Most of the things I learned there are behaviours that would be maladaptive in any other environment. Run, run, do not work there. Seriously, I have survived combat and that is preferable over the UCC.

I loved my work and my colleagues around the country. I saw faith in action and was inspired by many engaged young people. In a hurting world I believe the United Church of Canada is a welcoming and inclusive place that reminds the world that God loves ALL people. Humanity is beautifully complex and diverse and we along with God celebrate that.

Management: was pretty good and fair.
Co-workers: great team
Hardest part of the job: Lots of tedious edits 
Enjoyable part of the job: working with a great bunch of people and friendly.

The rewards focused around personal interaction and organizing.
I loved and still love planning and preparing for workshops, worship, educational events.
The rewards in personal interaction happened in many different areas, times and places.

After four years in IT. Coming here was the worst decision of my life. The organization os corrupt. The training is non existent. I did not feel supported and was constantly gaslit while I worked there.

The United Church of Canada was a great place to be trained by great managers and meet a lot of forward thinking individuals.
