Overview:
The function of the Fitter/Welder is to ensure all plant and manufacturing project tasks and activities are completed with the required quality standards met, in a timely manner and within budget and that all required documentation is maintained current at all times and to assume responsibilities as a project leader of jobs given to him/her.
Key Responsibilities of Role:
Assembly Duties
- Ensure of proper fit of keys and sprockets to shafts.
- Track and Lace Belts according to drawings.
- Set up and test all equipment prior to shipping, or as requested by supervisor.
- All final assemblies to be tagged as per drawings or instructions on BOM.
- Box and mark all items to be shipped loose with equipment.
- Run shear and form steel according to drawings provided.
- Wire motors temporarily for testing of conveyors in our plant.
- Put keyways in shafts on milling machine.
- Disassemble equipment in preparation for shipping.
- Plan daily work in order to meet on time completion.
- Install motors drives and photo eyes etc. according to schematics.
- Build skids and attach equipment to shipping skids in a secure manner.
- Set up and operate a transit and other equipment required for job.
Fitting Duties
- Whenever possible cross-reference parts for fit as your laying them out or fabricating them together to ensure they will go together on final assembly.
- Have a good understanding of weld distribution to reduce distortion.
- Deburr and remove sharp edges of material and welding splatter.
- All final weldments to be tagged as per drawings along with paint spec and job number.
- Laid out all parts prior to punching and drilling unless you have a helper working with you.
- Always laid out and fabricated from the front of drawings working towards the back, unless instructed otherwise by supervisor.
- Set up and operate Iron Worker.
- Set up and operate Horn Press.
Combined Duties
- Read analyze and interpret technical drawings, blueprints or schematics of machined parts, assemblies, and fabricated parts.
- Guide, direct and coordinate multiple plant disciplines with up to one (1) employees in the department.
- Ensure all changes are recorded on ECR Form and drawings are marked up to suit as-build status of equipment.
- Report any shortage of supplies and consumables to production supervisor in writing.
- Report all quality concerns to Production Supervisor.
- Dispose of all non-conforming parts and material in the appropriately described manner.
- Respond to common inquiries or problems on project at hand.
- Plan out area for assembly or fabrication with supervisor.
- Notify supervisor of job completion.
- Set up and operate Plasma.
- Set up and operate Drill Press.
- Other duties and projects that may be assigned from time to time by the Production Supervisor.
Housekeeping Duties
- Perform regular maintenance on welders and plasma.
- Upon completion of fabrication or assembly, all left over material and tools to be put back in its appropriate place.
- All jigs to be returned to there appropriate location.
- Punch press: Tools to be put back on board beside punch press after each used and extra punches and dies to be put back in proper location.
- Remove slugs so punch can be inserted into die.
- Iron worker: To be set back up 7/16” Dia round and remainder of punches, dies and wrenches put back in proper location.
- Drill press: Drill bits to be put back in appropriate location and drill press to be left clean.
- Cleanliness of work area.
- Shut off equipment after use, for break, lunch, at the end of a shift or long period of time.
Qualifications
- Minimum 3 years or more experience as Welder/ Fitter of an equivalent fabrication manufacturing related operation with a minimum of $1,000,000 in annual sales.
- Applied Technology courses in Blueprint Reading, Welding, Millwrighting, Machining, or other related fields.
- Any recognized Fabrication/Machining/Welding or Industrial Maintenance Certification.
- Valid Driver’s License with clear abstract and the ability to meet and requirements of the Company Insurance carrier. Ability to cross the Canadian / United States border without encountering problems.
- CNC Control is an asset.
- Supervisory or Quality Control Training is an asset.
- Ability to guide, direct, and coordinate multiple Plant disciplines with up to one (1) or more employees in the Department.
- Ability to read, analyze, and interpret technical drawings, blueprints or schematics of fabricated and machined parts and assemblies.
- Ability to respond to common inquiries or problems on project at hand.
- Knowledge of the fabricated and machined parts industry and trends impacting its business.
- Ability to effectively communicate, in English, both verbally and in writing.
- Ability to do Arc, Mig, & Tig welding
- Ability to weld vertical and horizontal
- Must be able to lift up to 50lbs (26kg)
- Have a good understanding of weld distribution to reduce distortion.
- Ability to put keyways in shafts on milling machine.
- Ability to run shear and form steel.
- Ability to Set up and Run the following equipment:
- Welding Machine;
- Oxyacetylene Cutting Torch and Plazma
- Ironworker
- Bandsaw (vertical and horizontal)
- Horn Press
- Transit
- Power Hand Tools eg. Drills, Grinder; Belt Sander
- Rolling Machine; Break, Shear
- Milling Machine; Lathe
- Overhead Crane
- Forklift
- Arbor Press
- BODY POSITIONS: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand for prolonged periods of time.
