As part of our continued expansion into the skilled trades sector, we would be launching a TSSA-approved Gas Technician 3 & 2 Program designed to prepare students with the theoretical knowledge and practical skills required to pursue careers in Ontario's gas and heating industry.
We are seeking an experienced gas technician and educator to join our team as the Program Advisor & Lead Instructor. This is a newly created position established to support the strategic development and expansion of the College's Skilled Trades Training Division.
The successful candidate will play a key role in the planning, development, implementation, and ongoing delivery of the Gas Technician 3 & 2 Program while ensuring compliance with all applicable Technical Standards and Safety Authority (TSSA) in Ontario.
This is a newly created position at Business and Technical Training College, established to support the strategic development and expansion of the College's Skilled Trades Training Division.
Position Overview
The Program Advisor & Lead Instructor will work closely with the College's academic leadership team to develop a high-quality, industry-aligned Gas Technician 3 & 2 Program from the ground up.
The successful candidate will lead the development of the curriculum, lesson plans, learning resources, practical training activities, student assessments, and instructor guides while ensuring the program meets TSSA standards, current industry practices, and employer expectations.
In addition to curriculum development, the successful candidate will provide expert guidance on the planning and development of the College's gas technician training laboratory, including recommendations for equipment, tools, training appliances, safety systems, and workshop layout.
Following program approval and launch, the successful candidate will serve as the Lead Instructor responsible for delivering classroom, laboratory, and practical instruction while supporting the continuous improvement of the program.
Key Responsibilities
Curriculum Development & Academic Leadership
- Design and develop a comprehensive Gas Technician 3 & 2 curriculum aligned with TSSA requirements and industry best practices.
- Develop course outlines, lesson plans, instructor guides, student manuals, presentations, assignments, quizzes, examinations, and practical assessments.
- Create competency-based learning activities that support both theoretical knowledge and practical skill development.
- Develop evaluation methods that accurately assess student competency.
- Review and update curriculum regularly to reflect changes in regulations, codes, technology, and industry practices.
- Support continuous quality improvement and academic excellence.
Training Facility Planning & Development
- Advise on the design, layout, and functionality of the Gas Technician training laboratory.
- Recommend equipment, tools, appliances, training systems, and instructional resources required for practical training.
- Assist in planning laboratory workstations that simulate real-world service and installation environments.
- Recommend safety procedures, ventilation requirements, storage solutions, and equipment procurement.
- Ensure the laboratory meets TSSA requirements and supports effective hands-on learning.
Instruction & Student Success
- Deliver engaging classroom and laboratory instruction.
- Facilitate practical demonstrations and hands-on training sessions.
- Evaluate student performance through written examinations, practical assessments, and competency evaluations.
- Mentor students throughout the program and support their academic success.
- Maintain a safe, professional, and inclusive learning environment.
Industry Collaboration & Program Development
- Ensure the program remains aligned with current TSSA requirements, applicable codes, and industry standards.
- Maintain awareness of changes in gas industry regulations, equipment, and technologies.
- Provide recommendations for ongoing curriculum enhancements and program improvements.
- Collaborate with the College's academic leadership team to support program quality, compliance, and growth.
Qualifications
- Minimum 10+ years of industry experience as a Gas Technician.
- Valid TSSA Gas Technician 1 (G1) Licence required.
- Minimum 5+ years experience in teaching, instructor, or apprenticeship training experience is required.
- Experience developing curriculum, lesson plans, or instructional materials is an asset.
- Strong knowledge of TSSA regulations, Ontario codes, gas-fired appliances, installation practices, troubleshooting, and safety requirements.
- Experience planning or establishing technical training laboratories or workshops is required.
- Excellent communication, presentation, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office and learning management systems is considered an asset.
Work Schedule:
The successful candidate will be expected to manage their time effectively and meet project milestones, deliverables, and deadlines as established by the College.

Pay: $55.00-$65.00 per hour
