OVERVIEW OF THE ROLE:
We are seeking an experienced finance leader to join Henry's on a temporary basis to cover a maternity leave. This is an exciting opportunity to make an immediate impact within a dynamic retail environment
The VP of Finance drives financial strategy and performance, aligning with company goals to maximize profitability and growth. The VP Finance manages financial risks, optimizes capital allocation, and ensures compliance with regulations through accurate reporting and strong controls. Leading a high-performing team, the VP Finance fosters excellence and collaboration to achieve financial stability and strategic objectives.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Strategic Planning & Leadership:
- Manage Finance and IT departments
Operational Excellence:
- Strategic Project Leadership: Spearhead and collaborate on strategic initiatives, including financial system customizations, process optimization, and change management programs, ensuring alignment with organizational objectives.
- Financial Reporting & Analysis: Direct the preparation of accurate, timely, and insightful consolidated financial statements (monthly, quarterly, and annual), accompanied by comprehensive notes for executive leadership and investors, facilitating informed decision-making. Review Balance Sheet account reconciliations prepared by the Accounting team monthly, or quarterly as needed. Provide weekly results to owners, calling out any major events or trends in the data.
- Financial Planning & Analysis: Conduct comprehensive ad hoc financial analyses to support financial reporting requirements, strategic initiatives, and emerging business opportunities, while providing expert oversight to the Financial Planning & Analysis (FP&A) function.
- Accounting & Finance Operations Management: Oversee all aspects of accounting and finance operations, including the development and management of annual budget and forecasts, the implementation of robust risk management strategies, and the maintenance of internal controls.
- Tax Strategy & Compliance: Manage monthly and annual tax activities, elections, and filings, ensuring strict adherence to all government reporting mandates and tax regulations and filings. Act as the primary liaison with the CRA for sales tax audits.
- Bank Reporting & Compliance: Act as the primary liaison with the bank, delivering weekly, monthly, quarterly and annual reporting requirements and ensuring compliance with all covenants.
- Process Improvement & Technology Implementation: Champion initiatives to enhance accounting workflow efficiency, implement industry best practices in the utilization of financial, payroll, and reporting systems, and leverage emerging technologies to optimize financial processes.
- Business Administration Support: Provide essential support to key business administration functions, encompassing contract negotiation and management, insurance renewals, real estate oversight, record retention protocols, and procurement expense management.
- Payroll Oversight: Supervise the accurate and timely processing of payroll, ensuring compliance with all applicable regulations and internal policies.
- Cash Flow Monitoring & Management: Proactively monitor and manage the organization's cash flow on a daily basis, implementing strategies to optimize liquidity and ensure financial stability.
- Oversee IT Department. Provide leadership to Director of IT.
- Project Evaluation: Evaluate IT project scopes, return on investment (ROI), and key performance indicators (KPIs) to ensure alignment with strategic objectives and maximize value creation.
- Team Leadership & Development: Lead, mentor, and develop a high-performing team of finance professionals, fostering a culture of continuous learning and providing opportunities for skill enhancement and career advancement in alignment with evolving organizational needs.
- Audit Management: Coordinate and manage the year-end audit process, overseeing the preparation of schedules and financial statements in collaboration with external auditors to ensure a seamless and efficient audit experience and timely delivery of audited financial statements to ownership and lender.
Business Development & Innovation:
- Design and present cost-cutting strategies
- Innovate new business models to reduce cost and increase operational efficiencies via cost optimizations
- Financial insights to business leaders and stakeholders
- Performance management ensuring accountability and ROI
Reporting and Administration:
- Cashflow monitoring and working capital management
- Payment approvals
- KPI reviews
- Financial statement preparations and presentation
- Budget and Forecast variance analysis
SUCCESS METRICS
- Improve EBITDA and financial ratios
- Company cost reduction initiatives
- Review accounting policies and processes and adjust as necessary
- Improve cashflow through working capital restructuring
- Review company finance requirements and long-term goals
- Improve reporting for strategic decision making
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE
- CPA designation with 10+ years of applicable business and operational finance leadership experience
- In-depth knowledge and expertise in accounting (ASPE) and ERP financial systems (preferably D365 Finance and Operations)
- Demonstrated track record of success in a finance leadership role, including experience leading, coaching and growing a high-performing team of professionals
- Deep understanding of Canadian tax and legal requirements
- Strong initiative, drive and results focus with an entrepreneurial mindset
- Strong oral and written English communication skills
- Demonstrated ability to work with all levels of the organization including investors and external stakeholders
- Must have a curious and collaborative spirit, keen sense of organization and attention to detail
- Excellent organizational skills and problem-solving skills
- Experience with privately owned companies or equivalent is preferred but not required
- Multi-site and retail preferred but not required
