Position Overview:
Excella Equine Park will be a full-service equestrian facility located at Excella Equine Estates for the convenience of future residents and the surrounding community. This modern hub for equestrian living and training features first-class amenities and professional care tailored to meet a variety of equestrian needs.
Currently, the facility is a private breeding operation, which includes 10+ horses with a new heated barn and indoor riding arena. A few horses need regular dressage, driving or saddleseat training for the purpose of pleasure, competition, or sales. Once the project is approved, we can begin to train for outside clients and provide riding lessons.
The Barn Manager at Excella Equine Park oversees the upkeep of the facility and the health and safety of the horses. This is a live-in position, with the successful candidate having the benefit of living on-site at the facility, included in salary.
Key Responsibilities:
- Health and safety of all horses and people, ensuring best practice in policies, procedures, cleaning standards, education and control of all using facilities.
- Work with owner to establish facility, maintaining a strong reputation within the horse industry.
- Maintain the property and facility: diligently manage facilities, pastures, paddocks, arenas, and grounds, maintaining a positive public image.
- Inventory and purchasing: ensure necessary feeds, equipment and supplies required to operate facilities and care for horses, ensure good repair and security of inventory.
- Provide best care to horses: including feeding, stall cleaning, paddock/pasture cleaning, and routine daily horse care; be on call for 24 hr emergency care as needed.
- Horse nutrition and health: test feed, adapt diets to individual needs, provide routine medical care, treat injuries, vaccines, deworming, assist farrier, and consult with vet and other specialists as needed.
- Horse behaviour and disposition: anticipate and prevent any possible behavioural problems and work with horses to correct any existing issues.
- Watering and routine checks: health & safety, cleaning/filling waterers, keeping feed areas clean and mouse proof, all areas sanitized/disease free, pest and rodent control.
- Daily turnout: and/or exercise of horses and proper physical conditioning as well as mental health of horses, may include indoor/outdoor arena use, walks and trail rides.
- Daily training of horses: at all levels, from start to finish, mainly for dressage, but willing to help train horses for saddle seat, driving, western, and disabled riding purposes.
- Showing of horses: oversee all horse show preparation, including show grooming, cleaning tack, packing of supplies, and trailering of horses.
- Trailering horses: acclimate horses to loading and unloading horses trailers easily, with the ability to drive a truck with four horse trailer and provide safe transportation of horses.
- Manage breeding of mares and stallions: help with annual planning, pre-natal care, foaling and imprinting, and halter training of foals.
- Attracting clients: develop relationships with property owners and cater to horse owners in providing great experiences.
- Safe client care: provide hospitality to Excella Estates residents, family, friends, and public visitors to the facilities, allowing them to enjoy the horses in a safe environment.
- Manage risks: research, acknowledge, and follow all employer, insurance, municipal, provincial, and federal government and horse association policies and legal regulations.
- General upkeep of facility: oversee and participate in the general upkeep and maintenance of the property. This includes operation of equipment such as the skid steer and tractors. Light duty mechanical, plumbing and construction work and working with outside contractors as needed.
- Lead a small team of Stable Hands: schedule, recruitment, training, coaching, performance management.
- Other duties as appropriately assigned.
Qualifications:
- At least 2 years in a similar position or setting overseeing a horse facility.
- Previous experience as a trainer is considered an asset, preferably English or Dressage.
- Experience with basic farm equipment, including skid steers, tractors and horse trailers.
- Strong knowledge of horse health, breeding, temperament, and care.
- This is a hands-on, physically demanding role. The candidate must be physically fit and able to spend long periods of time standing, walking, crouching, twisting, turning, and lifting up to 75lbs.
