JOB OPENING: Snowmelter Technician / Assembler
Trecan Combustion Limited has an immediate opening for a full-time, permanent Snowmelter Technician / Assembler to join our team.
The successful candidate will have a strong mechanical aptitude, excellent troubleshooting abilities, and a willingness to travel throughout Canada and the United States during peak service periods. This position reports directly to the Shop Foreman.
Trecan is a Canadian-owned company that has been designing and manufacturing industry-leading Snowmelters for over 35 years. Our equipment is used worldwide by airports, municipalities, contractors, and industrial customers. Trecan’s submerged combustion technology and advanced remote monitoring systems have established our products as the industry standard in snow melting equipment.
This position is ideal for someone who enjoys hands-on mechanical and electrical work, problem-solving, travel, and customer interaction.
Job Tasks
Assembly
- Read and interpret mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, electrical, fuel system drawings, shop drawings, and assembly documentation.
- Read and interpret assembly work instructions and parts lists.
- Assemble mechanical and electrical components using supplied instructions and effective work practices.
- Complete mechanical and electrical assembly of control panels and related equipment.
- Use subassemblies, tools, and materials efficiently and safely.
- Test assembled equipment using testing checklists and supporting documentation.
- Troubleshoot equipment using electrical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and fuel system drawings.
- Perform QA inspections as required.
- Use balancing equipment to balance Trecan-fabricated impellers and related components.
- Ensure all completed work is safe, functional, and meets quality standards.
Testing
- Test operation and performance of new Snowmelters.
- Perform burner emissions testing, snow melting tests, and sound level measurements.
- Conduct product reliability testing and testing of potentially defective components.
- Collect and document water samples from Snowmelter discharge.
- Test and evaluate new Snowmelter software and systems.
- Perform testing for Research & Development (R&D) projects.
- Prepare detailed reports documenting testing activities and results.
- Review Operator’s Manuals and troubleshooting procedures for accuracy.
- Assist with preparation of training materials and technical documentation.
Service & Field Work (When Required)
- Commission and start up Trecan-manufactured equipment at customer sites.
- Provide on-site operator training to customers.
- Troubleshoot, repair, and maintain equipment in the field.
- Perform preventive maintenance services.
- Load and configure software/programs including SCADAPacks, OIs, modems, and Sauer-Danfoss controllers when applicable.
- Communicate intended work plans with customers and provide follow-up reporting upon completion.
- Build positive relationships with customers and represent Trecan professionally at all times.
- Produce timely and detailed service reports and ticket updates.
- Promote future equipment sales and provide consulting support for existing equipment.
General Duties
- Attend weekly toolbox meetings and required training sessions.
- Accurately record labour time in the company tracking system.
- Follow all Inspection Test Plans (ITPs), work orders, and required sign-off procedures.
- Report damaged equipment, faulty equipment, or safety hazards to management.
- Assist with annual inventory counts when required.
- Perform additional shop support and cleanup duties as assigned by the Shop Foreman or Management.
Requirements
- Strong mechanical aptitude and troubleshooting abilities.
- Ability to read and interpret assembly instructions, technical drawings, schematics, diagrams, and work orders.
- Ability to make modifications to electrical wiring and replace/reassemble components.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality workmanship.
- Ability to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Strong organizational, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
- Productive mindset with a willingness to learn new skills specific to the Snowmelter industry.
- Willingness and ability to travel extensively within Canada and the United States during peak season (approximately 25% travel).
- Strong customer service skills and professionalism while representing Trecan at customer sites.
- Ability to safely operate tools and equipment and comply with all safety procedures.
- Working safely is a condition of employment. There is zero tolerance for impairment while on duty.
Working Conditions
- Work indoors and outdoors in industrial and manufacturing environments.
- Exposure to loud noise levels requiring hearing protection.
- Exposure to fumes and airborne particles requiring respirator use.
- Frequent bending, kneeling, crouching, crawling, climbing, reaching, sitting, and standing.
- Must be able to climb into, over, and under Snowmelters.
- Ability to lift or move up to 50 pounds.
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
Employees must provide their own CSA-approved steel toe boots (6 to 8 hole). Trecan will provide all additional required PPE, including safety glasses, gloves, respirators, hearing protection, hard hats, and related safety equipment.
Schedule
When not travelling, the regular schedule is Monday to Friday, 7:00 AM to 3:30 PM.
Union Information
This position is unionized and covered under the collective agreement between Trecan and the United Association of Journeymen and Apprentices of the Plumbing and Pipe Fitting Industry of the United States and Canada, Local 56 (the “Union”).
Preference will be given to qualified internal applicants. The successful applicant will be required to become, or remain, a member in good standing with the Union.
