Position Summary
The Executive Managing Director is responsible for providing strategic and operational leadership across Engineering, Product Development, Manufacturing, Supply Chain, and Corporate Administration. This executive role ensures the organization delivers innovative, high-quality products while maintaining operational excellence, financial performance, and regulatory compliance.
Reporting directly to the executive leadership team, the Executive Managing Director serves as the bridge between technical engineering functions and corporate operations, aligning engineering innovation with business strategy to drive sustainable growth, profitability, and organizational performance.
This position is ideally suited for an accomplished Mechanical or Electrical Engineer who has progressed into senior manufacturing and executive leadership roles and possesses a strong understanding of engineering, production, finance, and organizational management.
Key Responsibilities:
Engineering & Product Leadership
- Develop and execute the long-term engineering and product development strategy aligned with corporate objectives.
- Lead all engineering functions, including Mechanical, Electrical, Manufacturing, and Product Engineering.
- Drive research and development initiatives to improve existing products and develop innovative technologies.
- Oversee product lifecycle management from concept, design, testing, validation, manufacturing, and market launch.
- Ensure engineering designs comply with applicable regulatory, safety, quality, and industry standards.
- Establish engineering best practices, design standards, and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Promote innovation while protecting company intellectual property and proprietary technologies.
- Support customer-driven product customization and engineering solutions.
Manufacturing Operations
- Provide executive leadership for all manufacturing facilities and production operations.
- Develop strategies to improve productivity, efficiency, quality, and manufacturing throughput.
- Implement Lean Manufacturing, Six Sigma, Kaizen, or other continuous improvement methodologies.
- Oversee production scheduling, capacity planning, and resource allocation.
- Ensure manufacturing processes consistently meet quality, safety, and delivery objectives.
- Reduce manufacturing costs through process optimization and Bill of Materials (BOM) management.
- Monitor production performance through KPIs, reporting, and operational analytics.
- Lead capital equipment planning and manufacturing technology investments.
Supply Chain & Procurement
- Develop strategic sourcing initiatives and maintain strong supplier relationships.
- Oversee procurement, inventory management, logistics, and material planning.
- Identify and mitigate supply chain risks while ensuring business continuity.
- Negotiate strategic supplier agreements to improve pricing, quality, and delivery performance.
- Collaborate with engineering teams to optimize component selection and manufacturing costs.
Corporate Administration & Business Operations
- Lead corporate administration including Finance, Human Resources, Information Technology, and Facilities.
- Manage departmental budgets, capital expenditures (CAPEX), and operational expenditures (OPEX).
- Maintain full accountability for Profit & Loss (P&L) performance and overall business profitability.
- Develop annual business plans, financial forecasts, and operational strategies.
- Ensure effective workforce planning, talent acquisition, leadership development, and employee retention.
- Foster a collaborative, high-performance organizational culture across all departments.
- Oversee enterprise systems including ERP, engineering software, cybersecurity, and digital transformation initiatives.
Governance, Compliance & Risk Management
- Ensure compliance with all applicable corporate, environmental, workplace safety, and regulatory requirements.
- Maintain ISO quality standards and other applicable industry certifications.
- Oversee corporate governance policies and operational risk management programs.
- Ensure engineering, manufacturing, and administrative operations adhere to legal and ethical business practices.
Executive Leadership
- Develop and execute strategic initiatives that support long-term organizational growth.
- Collaborate with executive leadership to establish company objectives and performance targets.
- Provide regular operational and financial reporting to ownership and senior stakeholders.
- Lead organizational change initiatives and drive continuous improvement across the business.
- Build alignment between engineering, manufacturing, sales, finance, and administrative departments.
- Represent the organization with customers, suppliers, government agencies, and strategic partners.
QualificationsEducation
- Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering or electrical engineering (required).
- Professional Engineering designation (P.Eng.) is considered a strong asset.
- MBA or equivalent postgraduate business qualification is highly preferred.
Experience
- Minimum 12 years of progressive leadership experience in engineering and manufacturing.
- Demonstrated advancement from technical engineering roles into executive leadership.
- Experience managing multidisciplinary engineering teams and manufacturing operations.
- Proven responsibility for corporate administration, financial management, and business operations.
- Experience in industrial equipment manufacturing, power generation, heavy equipment, automation, or related industries is preferred.
