The Opportunity
Armstrong Milling is seeking a hands-on Maintenance Supervisor for our Hagersville-area facility.
Reporting to the Plant Manager, this is an excellent opportunity for an experienced skilled-trades professional who enjoys leading people, solving mechanical and electrical problems, and improving the reliability of a busy manufacturing operation. You will oversee and participate in the day-to-day work of the maintenance department, coordinate preventive and corrective maintenance, lead projects, develop your team, and work closely with Operations to keep our facility safe, productive, and running efficiently.
This is an on-site leadership role requiring schedule flexibility and availability to support urgent or after-hours maintenance needs.
What You’ll Do:
- Oversee the day-to-day operations of the maintenance department, including delegating work to support effective use of maintenance labour.
- Participate directly in maintenance tasks, repairs, projects, troubleshooting, and tool use when required.
- Plan, organize, and oversee maintenance-team schedules.
- Coordinate coverage of maintenance duties during employee absences.
- Follow up regularly with team members during assigned work to ensure tasks are completed safely, proficiently, and on time.
- Provide ongoing feedback on quality of work, safe work practices, productivity, and efficient use of time.
- Hold regular maintenance-team meetings to promote communication, accountability, and alignment on priorities.
- Ensure maintenance processes are followed and continuously improved.
Preventive Maintenance, Reliability, and Projects
- Use MaintainX system to assign, track, and manage planned, unplanned, and preventive maintenance work orders across all locations.
- Serve as the process owner for MaintainX and ensure maintenance activities, inspections, and records are completed accurately.
- Lead and coordinate preventive-maintenance activities, equipment repairs, building repairs, plant upgrades, and other maintenance projects.
- Routinely inspect the facility and equipment to identify maintenance needs; document findings and communicate required actions.
- Build an in-depth understanding of site equipment, related systems, and production processes to resolve chronic downtime issues and identify improvement opportunities.
- Support continuous-improvement initiatives focused on equipment reliability, operational efficiency, quality, and productivity.
- Keep current on maintenance technology and potential applications in material handling, manufacturing, and packaging by engaging industry experts and attending relevant trade shows or conferences where appropriate.
Team, Contractor, and Workforce Management
- Lead performance management for maintenance-team members, including attendance (Dayforce), quality of work, productivity, behavioural concerns, engagement, and development.
- Work with the Plant Manager and HR to coach employees and apply progressive discipline when necessary.
- Support maintenance workforce planning by identifying staffing and training needs.
- Participate in interviewing, hiring decisions, onboarding, and training for new maintenance employees.
- Provide leadership, coaching, and development support to apprentices.
- Work with HR to explore incentive and development options for an apprenticeship program.
- Hire, coordinate, and manage on-site contractors in partnership with the Plant Manager, ensuring work is completed safely, on time, and to Armstrong Milling’s quality expectations.
- Plan and coordinate maintenance employees and contractors to support production needs and departmental priorities.
Cross-Functional Collaboration and Compliance
- Partner with Operations and other department managers to ensure equipment is maintained to high standards for safety, quality, productivity, and efficiency.
- Provide the broader Operations team with updates on key maintenance initiatives, upcoming challenges, and project progress.
- Lead maintenance communication and response when emergency or crisis situations arise, directing staff and providing timely updates to site leadership.
- Review maintenance-team payroll hours every payroll cycle, ensure time is entered accurately, and work with Finance and management to resolve discrepancies.
- Participate in company working groups and required meetings, including the JHSC, continuous-improvement, and Quality initiatives.
- Identify and report unsafe conditions, including conditions that may affect food safety.
- Maintain confidentiality and protect sensitive company, employee, customer, and business information.
Required Qualifications
- Skilled-trade Red Seal certification, such as a 433A Industrial Mechanic Millwright or 442A Industrial Electrician.
- At least five years of industrial maintenance experience, including at least two years of experience leading or supervising maintenance employees.
- Demonstrated ability to coach employees, manage performance, address workplace issues, and work collaboratively with HR for support.
- Strong hands-on mechanical and electrical troubleshooting skills, including the ability to safely use tools, prioritize breakdown response, and direct repairs in a production environment.
- Experience using a ERP to manage work orders, preventive-maintenance programs, maintenance records, and parts usage.
- Comfortable using standard Microsoft Office applications.
- Working knowledge of industrial health and safety requirements, including hazard assessments, lockout/tagout, contractor safety, and the Canada Labour Code Part II.
- JHSC experience or the ability to actively participate in JHSC activities.
- Demonstrated ability to plan and coordinate employees and contractors, manage competing priorities, and communicate effectively across departments.
- Ability to provide after-hours emergency support when operationally required.
Preferred Qualifications
- Maintenance experience in feed milling, grain handling, food processing, or a comparable continuous-process manufacturing facility.
- Familiarity with SQF, HACCP, GMP, or other food/feed safety programs.
- Knowledge of combustible-dust hazards and related controls.
- Experience with root-cause analysis, risk assessments, reliability-centred maintenance, or continuous-improvement methods.
- PLC troubleshooting experience.
- Experience developing apprentices or supporting apprenticeship programs.
Working Conditions
- This is a full-time, on-site position at our Hagersville / Nelles Corners-area facility.
- Regular work in a manufacturing environment with dust, noise, moving equipment, and required personal protective equipment.
- Ability to climb stairs and ladders, work at heights or in confined spaces when trained and authorized, and lift or move up to 25 kg.
- Schedule flexibility is required to support production priorities, maintenance emergencies, and after-hours response.
- Possible travel to our New York facility
Compensation and Benefits
- Pay Range: Depending on experience - $95,000 to $105,000 per year, paid bi-weekly, based on a 40-hour work week.
- Potential eligibility for performance-based incentive program of up to 6% annually.
- Three weeks of vacation to start, with progressive vacation entitlement up to five weeks based on years of service.
