While the administrative home base for this position is Didsbury, Alberta, the scope of West-Can Seal Coating's operations is regionally expansive. We specialize in a variety of road and civil projects, including micro-surfacing, chip sealing, road building and the repair of bridges and culverts. Although the majority of our work is concentrated across the prairie provinces, Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba, our operations occasionally extend into British Columbia and Ontario.
Summary
West-Can Seal Coating is looking for a skilled Journeyman Truck and Trailer Mechanic to join our Didsbury team. This critical position focuses on the maintenance and repair of heavy trucks and trailers, ensuring our fleet remains safe and efficient as we work on infrastructure projects that benefit communities.
A core requirement for all operations staff, including the Journeyman Truck and Trailer Mechanic, is the ability to handle multi-week deployments to remote project locations. This travel commitment is vital for completing our contracted projects throughout Western Canada. We expect our employees to approach their schedules and work locations with a professional and flexible mindset during the construction season.
Responsibilities:
- Diagnose, repair, and maintain a fleet of highway trucks and trailers for optimal road readiness and reliability.
- Perform comprehensive inspections, maintenance, and repairs on trucks and trailers.
- Troubleshoot engine, transmission, brake, electrical, suspension, mechanical, and hydraulic systems.
- Conduct routine inspections to identify and resolve mechanical problems proactively.
- Perform scheduled maintenance services, including oil changes, brake adjustments, and tire replacements.
- Diagnose mechanical issues accurately using appropriate tools and techniques to ensure timely and effective repairs.
- Utilize hand and power tools effectively for repairs, maintenance, welding, and assembly tasks.
- Assemble and disassemble machinery components as needed for maintenance or repair tasks.
- Maintain accurate records of maintenance performed, parts used, and complete work orders and maintenance logs with accuracy.
- Adhere to company safety protocols and industry regulations, maintaining a clean and organized work area.
- Mentor apprentices and contribute to team knowledge sharing.
- Stay updated on industry trends and advancements in truck and transport technology.

Qualifications:
- Valid Class 5 Driver's License (Class 1 or Class 3 License Considered an Asset).
- Valid Truck and Trailer License (Required).
- Red Seal or Inter-Provincial Certification (Considered an Asset).
- Valid Commercial Vehicle Inspection Program (CVIP) (Required).
- Proven experience as a Truck & Transport Mechanic in a heavy-duty truck repair shop, with preferred experience in maintaining and repairing trailers.
- Capability to perform heavy lifting (up to 50 pounds) consistently throughout the day and occasionally work at shoulder level with equipment weighing up to 25 pounds.
- Competency using various computer systems to record and document repairs and diagnose problems.
- Must be able to supply your own set of hand tools to perform repairs.
- Willing and able to work overtime, in remote locations, and away for extended periods at a time as per Employment Standards.
- Valid First Aid & CPR
- Must be able to pass pre-employment, and post-incident drug and alcohol testing.
Work Conditions & Physical Requirements:
- From May to October, this position functions as a field service technician. This involves working outside a traditional shop environment, traveling across Western Canada to provide on-site service and support to West-Can crews.
- From November to April, this position will be based in the Didsbury shop, focusing on winter overhauls and safety inspections for our fleet of trucks and trailers.
- Required to work through various weather elements.
- Required to work long hours away from home during peak season (May to October).
- Travel to off-site (including remote) locations will be required.
- Ability to work extended hours (up to 16 hours per shift during peak season).
- The capacity to lift 50 lbs independently or 100 lbs with assistance.
- Ability to work effectively in a shop environment with exposure to dust, noise, fumes, and varying temperatures
- Work in small spaces.
- Work alone, both in the maintenance shop and remote locations during peak season.
- Frequent bending, crouching and kneeling.
- Use of required personal protective equipment (PPE), such as hearing protection, eye protection, hard hats, gloves and safety boots, is mandatory.
Typical Work Schedule:
- Monday to Friday: 9 hours per day (8 hours on Friday) / 44 hours per week during non peak season (November - April)
- Weekends as required during Peak Season (May-October)
- Overtime as required during Peak Season (May-October)
- On-Call as required during Peak Season (May-October)
Compensation:
- Compensation will be determined based on the candidate's professional experience. The established hourly rate of $40.00 to $43.45 is designated for a Journeyman Truck and Trailer Mechanic with up to five years of experience specializing in trailer maintenance within a shop environment.
