About the position
As a Fertility Clinic & OR Nurse, you will contribute to Anova by utilizing the nursing process in planning, executing and evaluating the nursing care given to patients to undergo Oocyte retrieval, embryo transfer, D&C, microsurgical sperm aspiration, and other minor surgical procedures. You will be responsible for planning and delivering safe and effective nursing care in the procedure room, as well as in the recovery room. To thrive in this role, the incumbent is required to build and maintain collaborative relationships within and outside the IVF Centre, as various functions rely on each other’s performance. You will ensure that all documentation is accessible, traceable and accurate. Crucially, you will share the founder, Dr. Marjorie Dixon’s commitment to being the gold standard for successful reproductive health and fertility centres. This position reports to the Nurse Manager or designate. In addition, the Fertility Clinic & OR Nurse provides patient education, treatment coordination, and clinical support throughout fertility treatment cycles, ensuring patients receive accurate information, timely follow-up, and compassionate care in accordance with established clinical protocols, regulatory standards, and physician treatment plans.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
General

Role-Specific
· Apply practical, technical, and special skills required, in compliance with College of Nurses of Ontario and other regulatory standards
· Apply knowledge of minor surgical procedures and check instrument and equipment set-up, preparing for procedures and anticipating physicians’ needs
· Secure informed consent and ensures that diagnostic reports and relevant information are in EMR prior to any treatments being performed
· Coordinate assigned patient fertility treatment plans in accordance with physician orders, established clinical protocols, and Centre policies
· Facilitate communication regarding treatment cycles between physicians, laboratory personnel, external healthcare providers, and partner fertility centres, as required
· Schedule and coordinate fertility procedures and treatment appointments, ensuring timely and accurate communication of treatment dates, instructions, and preparation requirements to patients
· Provide patient education regarding fertility treatments, procedures, medications, consent documentation, diagnostic testing, and treatment expectations, verifying patient understanding and documenting education provided.
· Perform preparations and procedures effectively and to highest possible standard, paying meticulous attention to detail
· Coordinate procedure room activities during treatment as circulating nurse or scrub nurse, ensuring smooth transition between surgical procedures
· Facilitate effective and efficient transition between surgical procedures
· Is available for patients’ sedation, monitor their vital signs monitors during sedation, assist as needed in sudden changes in patient condition, and assist as directed
· Review charts for completeness in accordance with documentation protocols prior and after procedure
· Review patient records, laboratory investigations, and diagnostic results to ensure that required information is available, complete, and appropriately actioned prior to treatment
· Maintain accurate, complete, and timely patient documentation within the EMR and other required reporting systems in accordance with organizational, professional, and regulatory requirements
· Prepare and administer medication in accordance with current practice (i.e., review physician orders, pre-op antibiotics, preparing/labeling medication on/off field utilizing 7 medication rights)
· Identify high-alert medication, conduct independent double-checks when indicated, and dispose of narcotic waste
· Provide patients with medication instructions and education as directed by the physician and in accordance with established clinical protocols.
· Coordinate prescription-related activities, maintain appropriate medication records and logs, and assist with pharmaceutical inventory management in accordance with applicable legislation, policies, and procedures
· Ensure that only licensed staff administer medication
· Handle and log narcotics, biohazard materials, and surgical specimens carefully and accurately
· Recognize emergency situations and respond effectively in calm and controlled manner
· Respond to patient inquiries, concerns, and complaints professionally, ensuring that issues are addressed, documented and escalated appropriately when required
· Ensure that all members of surgical team comply with principles of surgical asepsis, aseptic and sterile technique
· Maintain, clean, and sterilize instruments and equipment and maintain sanitary environment for provision of care
· Prepare procedure room for following day by bringing equipment, setting up, pulling cases accurately, and advising supervisor of items that are needed
· Attend all department and Centre meetings and assist with orientation of new employees
· Handle administrative duties, including inventory, log, and organization of procedure room medications, order medical supplies, and communicate with vendors regarding equipment or supply issues
· Perform fertility treatment monitoring activities within scope of practice, clinical competence, and organizational protocols
· Perform clinical fertility procedures within scope of practice, education, training, and organizational authorization
· Assist Centre in preparing for site visitation by OHPIP or any other body that Anova Fertility depends on for certification and licensing
· Perform audits of all equipment to ensure that this is functioning correctly and within critical parameters
· Assists in training of less-experienced staff, participating in demonstration of procedures during training sessions
· Identify, assess, and inform supervisor of unusual occurrences that may affect patients, department, or Centre and makes appropriate recommendations
· Contribute information and clinical observations to physicians and interdisciplinary team members to support development, implementation, and evaluation of patient care plans
· Maintain RN licensure, ACLS, and other professional certifications as required
· Maintain and continuously develop professional competence through ongoing education, evidence-informed practice, quality improvement activities, certification requirements, and participation in professional development initiatives relevant to the role.
· Undertake specific tasks and projects assigned by supervisor
Qualifications and Requirements
· Registered Practical Nurse Diploma from accredited institution
· Current ACLS accreditation and member in good standing of RNO
· Must have fertility experience
· Working toward certification in recognized Medical Device Reprocessing course preferred
· At least one (1) year of work experience in surgical setting (OR, medical/surgical, PACU), using reprocessing equipment, including steam sterilizers and gynecological instrument sterilization techniques
· Detailed knowledge of PIP guidelines as these relate to providing patient care
· Working knowledge of MS Office and medical software, including eIVF and Accuro
· Knowledge of working with programs and medical databases
· Detailed knowledge of current infection control practices
· Knowledge of minor surgical procedures and instrument and equipment set-up
· Knowledge of maintenance, cleaning and sterilization of instruments and equipment
· Knowledge of fertility treatment processes, assisted reproductive technologies, patient treatment coordination, and reproductive health nursing practices.
· Ability to provide patient education regarding complex treatment plans, medications, procedures, and diagnostic results using a patient-centred approach.
· Demonstrated ability to coordinate care across interdisciplinary teams while maintaining exceptional patient service standards.
· Strong knowledge of customer service principles and practices
· English language skills required; multilingualism an asset
