Full job description

GENERAL ACCOUNTABILITY

The Safety Advisor is responsible for supporting and administering Carol Lake Metal Works’ occupational health and safety program across shop, fabrication, welding, machining, hydraulics, support, and field-service operations. Supporting a workforce of approximately 120 employees, the role works closely with management, supervisors, Human Resources, employees, contractors, and customers to identify and control hazards, maintain legislative and customer compliance, coordinate safety training, investigate incidents, and strengthen a proactive safety culture. The Safety Advisor has day-to-day ownership of safety training coordination, booking, certification tracking, and employee compliance monitoring.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Safety Program & Regulatory Compliance

Support the development, implementation, review, and continuous improvement of CLMW health and safety policies, safe work practices, procedures, programs, and forms.
Monitor compliance with applicable occupational health and safety legislation, WorkplaceNL requirements, company standards, customer/site requirements, and contractor prequalification systems.
Support CLMW compliance and audit readiness for COR/PRIME, SafeContractor, Cognibox, and other customer or contractor-management requirements.
Provide practical safety guidance to supervisors and employees regarding hazard controls, PPE, safe work procedures, regulatory requirements, and stop-work responsibilities.
Participate in pre-job planning, risk assessments, Job Hazard Analyses (JHAs), Take 5s, and changes to work methods or equipment where safety input is required.

Training Coordination, Booking & Employee Compliance

Maintain an accurate training matrix based on job classification, task requirements, legislation, customer sites, and operational needs.
Identify required training for new hires, transfers, promotions, new tasks, and customer-site assignments in collaboration with Human Resources and operational leaders.
Schedule and book required internal and external safety training, including coordination with training providers, course dates, participant lists, quotes, purchase orders, cancellations, travel or site logistics, and invoices where applicable.
Assign and administer required online training through Cognibox, SafeContractor, or other company/customer systems and ensure employees receive clear completion deadlines.
Run regular outstanding, overdue, and expiry reports; proactively notify employees and supervisors of upcoming expiries and escalate unresolved compliance gaps to management.
Ensure employee certifications, licenses, competency records, attendance sheets, and course certificates are received, accurately recorded, filed, and kept current.
Coordinate refresher training before certifications expire and ensure employees are not assigned to work that requires training or authorization they do not currently hold.
Maintain and communicate monthly training schedules and provide management with a clear view of upcoming, overdue, and completed training.
Coordinate site-specific and customer-mandated training/clearances and verify workforce readiness before mobilization or assignment.

Inspections, Hazard Management & Safe Work Practices

Conduct and document regular workplace inspections across CLMW facilities, shops, yards, vehicles, and field work areas as required.
Identify hazards and unsafe conditions, recommend appropriate controls, assign corrective actions, and follow up to verified completion.
Review and support safe work practices and procedures for welding, fabrication, material handling, lifting/rigging, mobile equipment, working at heights, confined space, respiratory protection, and other industrial hazards.
Support supervisors with safety observations, coaching, field-level risk assessments, and corrective follow-up.

Incident Investigation & Corrective Action

Respond to and support investigation of workplace injuries, illnesses, near misses, property/equipment damage, environmental incidents, and unsafe conditions.
Complete or coordinate incident investigations using appropriate root-cause methods, gather statements and evidence, and prepare clear findings and recommendations.
Maintain the incident registry and supporting documentation, track corrective actions to completion, and identify trends or recurring hazards.
Ensure required internal and external incident notifications and reporting are completed within applicable timeframes.
Partner with Human Resources and management on WorkplaceNL claims, modified duties, and early and safe return-to-work processes as required.

Safety Communication, Committee & Culture

Coordinate and/or deliver safety orientations, toolbox talks, refresher training, safety meetings, and awareness initiatives.
Support the Occupational Health and Safety Committee by coordinating meetings, inspections, minutes, recommendations, action items, and follow-up as required.
Promote employee participation, hazard reporting, stop-work authority, and respectful safety conversations at all levels of the organization.
Support emergency preparedness activities including drills, first aid/first responder coverage, emergency equipment inspections, and response planning.
Support administration of PPE and occupational health programs such as respiratory protection, fit testing, hearing/eye protection, and prescription safety eyewear, as assigned.

Records, Reporting & Continuous Improvement

Maintain organized, current, and audit-ready safety documentation, including training records, inspections, incident files, corrective actions, meeting records, and program documentation.
Prepare regular safety metrics and reports for management, including incident trends, outstanding corrective actions, training compliance, and upcoming certification expiries.
Participate in internal and external safety audits, customer reviews, inspections, and continuous-improvement initiatives.
Remain current on relevant legislative, customer, and industry changes and recommend updates to CLMW practices where required.
Perform other related duties and responsibilities as assigned to support the safe and effective operation of Carol Lake Metal Works.

REQUIREMENTS

Post-secondary education or recognized certification in Occupational Health & Safety, Safety Management, or a related discipline; an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience will be considered.
Minimum 3 years of health and safety experience in an industrial environment; experience in welding, fabrication, mining, heavy equipment repair, machining, or field services is strongly preferred.
Working knowledge of Newfoundland and Labrador occupational health and safety requirements and WorkplaceNL processes.
Demonstrated experience with incident investigation, workplace inspections, hazard/risk assessments, corrective actions, and safety program administration.
Experience coordinating safety training, managing certification records, and monitoring employee compliance and expiry dates.
Valid Class 5 Driver’s License required.
First Aid certification is an asset.

TECHNICAL & PROFESSIONAL SKILLS

Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple training dates, expiries, corrective actions, and competing operational priorities.
Strong written and verbal communication skills with the confidence to coach employees, provide direction, and present safety information to groups.
Sound judgment, attention to detail, and the ability to document incidents and compliance matters objectively and accurately.
Strong computer skills, including Microsoft Office; experience with SharePoint, Monday.com, Cognibox, SafeContractor, or similar compliance/training systems is an asset.
Ability to build effective working relationships with employees, supervisors, managers, contractors, customers, training providers, and regulatory/industry contacts.
Ability to work independently while remaining highly collaborative with Operations and Human Resources.

POSITION DETAILS

Full-time, permanent position based in Labrador City, NL.
Work is performed in office, shop, yard, and customer-site environments and may involve exposure to noise, welding fumes, dust, mobile equipment, weather, and other industrial conditions.
Required PPE must be worn in designated areas and on customer sites.
Some travel, field/site visits, schedule flexibility, or after-hours response may be required based on operational needs, incidents, shutdowns, or training schedules.
The position may require extended periods of walking/standing and the ability to safely access active industrial work areas.
